America's upcoming 250th birthday is a time to celebrate our nation's history and the people who sacrificed so much to make it. Unfortunately, many of these important figures are too often forgotten, as are the few landmarks or historical sites left to remember them by.

Shockingly, the former home of one of the great leaders of the Revolution, John Glover, is still scheduled for demolition this summer in Massachusetts. Glover and his famed Marblehead regiment saved Washington's army three times, including rowing them across the Delaware River to victory in December 1776.

In our latest issue, Nancy L. Schultz, chair of the Swampscott History Commission, offers an update on the Glover House and the campaign to protect it. Their new non-profit 501(c)3, Save the Glover!, has raised nearly $600,000 in donations and pledges, but continues to be short of what's needed.

"Local advocacy remains strong, but the property’s future is still uncertain due to development pressures," Schultz writes. "Public engagement continues to be critical, especially as the 250th anniversary draws near and interest in Revolutionary War heritage increases."

"We must preserve this essential site, which is linked to our struggle for independence," she adds.

What did Revolutionary War hero General John Glover have to do with Beverly? More than you might think.

Join us this Saturday, May 16th at 2:00pm at the Cabot House (117 Cabot Street) for a fascinating program exploring the life, legacy, and preservation of one of the Revolution’s most important military leaders. While Glover is best known for his elegant Marblehead mansion and his final farmhouse in Swampscott, Beverly played a major role in his wartime story. From outfitting the schooner Hannah, the first vessel in Washington’s Navy, at his Beverly wharf, to defending Beverly Harbor with the 14th Continental Regiment, Glover’s ties to the city run deep. He also famously read the Declaration of Independence to his troops at what is now Independence Park in July 1776.

As Beverly celebrates its 400th anniversary and the nation marks the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, this special Armed Forces Day program will spotlight ongoing efforts to preserve Glover’s final home in Swampscott.

Historian Nancy Lusignan Schultz, Ph.D., Chair of the Swampscott Historical Commission, will share the remarkable story of the farmhouse and the work underway to save this important Revolutionary War site.

This special event is also a joint fundraiser supporting preservation efforts at both Historic Beverly and Save the Glover.

History, preservation, and community come together for one unforgettable evening. Join us by securing your tickets here: https://tinyurl.com/5yc245f9

Meet the man who saved the Revolution—and helped put Beverly on the map! 🌊🇺🇸

While many associate Colonel John Glover with Marblehead, his ties to Beverly are deep and legendary. A merchant, sailor, and fierce leader, Glover was the bridge between our local shores and American independence.

Here’s why he’s a North Shore icon:

🎣 The "Marbleheaders" (and Beverly men!): Glover led a rugged regiment of sailors and fishermen from Beverly and Marblehead. These weren't just soldiers; they were expert mariners who could handle a boat in any weather.

🚣‍♂️ The Great Escape: When Washington was trapped after the Battle of Long Island, it was Glover’s men who pulled off a silent, overnight evacuation, saving the entire Continental Army from capture.

❄️ Crossing the Delaware: That famous Christmas night crossing to Trenton? Glover and his men were the ones navigating those ice-choked waters.

⚓️ Birth of the Navy: Glover’s own schooner, the Hannah, was commissioned right here in Beverly, cementing our city's legacy as the Birthplace of the American Navy.

Next time you’re exploring Historic Beverly, take a second to salute this seafaring hero. Without the grit of Glover and the brave men of the North Shore, history might have taken a very different turn! 🏛️✨

General John Glover isn’t just a Marblehead or Swampscott story. He’s part of Beverly’s history too.

From a Beverly wharf, Glover outfitted the schooner Hannah, the first vessel in George Washington’s Navy. His regiment defended Beverly Harbor, and in July 1776 he read the Declaration of Independence to his troops at what is now Independence Park. His business network here helped supply the war effort and manage captured prizes.

This Armed Forces Day, join us to hear how that legacy is still being preserved. Nancy Lusignan Schultz, Ph.D., Chair of the Swampscott Historical Commission, will share updates on the effort to save Glover’s final home.

This is a joint fundraiser supporting preservation efforts at Historic Beverly and Save the Glover.
