Message from Mayor John Davis - August 3, 2020

Good Morning Swansboro,

Tropical Storm Isaias is approaching. I am very thankful that we can say this is currently a tropical storm and, in an odd sense, that we can say something almost normal is occurring. The Town of Swansboro Fire and Police departments are prepared to serve and protect you during this event.

Our town leadership is meeting multiple times daily to discuss preparations and operations. Our leadership has determined that our Emergency Operations Center will be activated with essential staff only. Fire and police will maintain normal operations with precautionary measures as needed.

At the time of this writing, the storm is projected to stay a tropical storm and is expected to go NW of Swansboro. Our largest concern at this time with the current track of the storm is high winds, isolated tornadoes, and storm surges for our downtown and other low-lying areas. As the storm approaches, we will issue a state of emergency for the town in order to make sure we are protecting town assets and operational costs through FEMA programs if we are severely impacted by the storm. I do not foresee any curfews or restrictions being enacted at this time. We do ask that you avoid any areas that have storm surge flooding or damage so emergency personnel, residents, and businesses can access them as needed for assistance and cleanup.

Town and community leaders are meeting regularly. Strong relationships are in place between civic, community, and government leadership. Our community as a whole is organized and ready to meet our humanitarian needs if they shall arise. I pray they will not.

I am in communication with Duke Energy; it is my hope that we will have very limited outages in the area.

A small list of tasks to consider as you prepare:
1) Batteries for your flashlights and radios
2) Have a tornado plan, where is the safe place in your house that you will go?
3) Pick up loose yard items, such as chairs and trash cans, make sure they are secure
4) Check on your neighbor to see if they need assistance

I want to thank our town staff for doing a tremendous job of preparedness and readiness. If you need anything, do not hesitate to call.

Respectfully, Mayor Davis
Town of Swansboro
