While SCFC personnel had a busy weekend with several large or otherwise difficult fires – very typical in April – the number of new ignitions is down significantly since the ban on all outdoor burning was issued last Friday.

The Forestry Commission would like to thank the public for heeding the warnings about the very high fire danger stretching from our mountains to our coast. The persistence of gusty winds, low relative humidity and extremely dry fuels across the state this week continues to make outdoor burning exceptionally risky. It bears repeating that April has historically seen the worst, most damaging and costly wildfires in South Carolina. Unfortunately, most of the wildfires to which the agency responded in the last few days were the result of human negligence. Not only do we ask for the public’s continued patience and restraint until the weather improves, but we also encourage everyone to share the news of the burning ban as far and widely as possible.

FORESTRY COMMISSION ISSUING RED FLAG FIRE ALERT FOR 33 COUNTIES SUNDAY

FORESTRY COMMISSION ISSUING RED FLAG FIRE ALERT FOR 33 COUNTIES SUNDAY

The South Carolina Forestry Commission is issuing a Red Flag Fire Alert for 33 counties across the Midlands, P*e Dee and coastal regions of the state, effective at 6 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 11.

A Red Flag Fire Alert does not prohibit outdoor burning, provided that all other state and local regulations are followed, but the Forestry Commission uses the alert to strongly encourage citizens to voluntarily postpone any such burning until the alert is lifted. Land managers who are considering conducting prescribed burns should take extra care if they still choose to burn under a Red Flag.

The alert is being issued to discourage people from burning outdoors when weather conditions present an elevated risk of wildfire. In addition to dry fuels resulting from the lack of significant rain, forecasts are calling for very low relative humidity – below 25% – and gusty winds across much of the state tomorrow.

Counties excluded from the Red Flag Fire Alert have received what Forestry Commission officials believe is sufficient rainfall to avoid an abundance of wildfire ignitions. They include Abbeville, Anderson, Cherokee, Chester, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Oconee, Pickens, Spartanburg, Union and York.

“The combination of dangerous conditions we’re going to see in the affected areas tomorrow are the classic ingredients for elevated wildfire risk, and they’re going to be vulnerable to fires that can escape easily and spread rapidly,” said SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones. “With this alert, we’re asking people to respect the weather and hold off from burning outdoors until the weather improves.”

While portions of the mountains and Piedmont have received minimal rainfall this week, fuels are already very dry in some areas. Low relative humidity and high wind speeds contribute greatly to wildfire risk. while rain wets fuels, fine surface fuels dry rapidly under low humidity and strong winds creating high fire danger.

Adding to the danger, particularly in the western part of the state, are the heavy fuel loads that remain in our forests from Hurricane Helene. Not only can these downed, drying trees and other fuels act as kindling, increasing the risk of wildfire ignition and spread, but they also are likely to impede firefighters’ access, adversely impacting response capability.

Although a Red Flag Fire Alert does not ban outdoor burning, it does trigger certain county or local ordinances that restrict outdoor fires, so residents should contact their local fire departments to check whether such restrictions apply in their areas. The alert will remain in effect until lifted by the Commission, whose fire managers will continuously monitor the situation.

A fire department’s culture is strong when firefighters are grateful to be there, not because of the schedule, the pay, or the pension, but because the culture pulls them in.

It’s strong when crews trust each other, train with purpose, and hold the standard by holding each other accountable, not with ego, but because it’s the right thing to do.

When accountability isn’t punishment, but proof that everyone cares enough to get better.

When people feel supported and challenged to grow, physically, mentally, and professionally.

A strong culture shows up on the fireground, but it’s built long before the call drops. It’s built in how we train, how we take care of one another, how we handle and respond to mistakes and ultimately how leaders serve.

When firefighters look forward to going to work, it’s because they know they are needed to fulfill the mission.

At approximately 6:40 this morning crews responded to a report of respiratory distress in our area. Upon arrival our crew lept into action delivering life savings measures. Members of our crew along with members of Calhoun County Fire District and Calhoun County EMS - SC came together and worked as a team providing care. This is what we train for, to do better and to better serve our community.

AWESOME NEWS this morning. While reporting to work this morning FF Wyatt Pound was just around the the corner from a medical call that turned into a cardiac arrest. He was able to quickly start patient care and CPR until arrival of some Jumper station members and then followed by Calhoun County EMS. God placed these hero’s at the right place at the right time! The following picture was an update from EMS after patient was transported to hospital. This heroic action can’t go unnoticed! Please like and share this post to get the GOOD NEWS out!
