Swansea Ambulance Corps

Swansea Ambulance Corps Our volunteers and staff have been providing emergency care to the residents of Swansea since 1953!
The Swansea Ambulance Corps provides emergency 911 service to the town of Swansea and surrounding communities.
(21)

While our primary mission is to respond to all emergency medical calls, we are also proud to support our town as a Heart Safe Community. In the event of a cardiac arrest, CPR is critically important. Please contact us if you would like to schedule or attend a free CPR class. We also provide weekly blood pressure checks at the Council on Aging!

Mission: To provide emergency care and transport to the sick and injured

*** CAUTION ***
You have probably already looked outside at the snow. Be aware that it is very wet and extremely heavy. Take care when shoveling, take frequent breaks, and stop if you experience pain.

Heart attacks brought on by shoveling are sadly not uncommon. We want you to be safe!

SAC

This is of interest to our clinical friends and partners. SAC is experimenting with new amazing capabilities that are possible using breakthrough technologies of “Machine Learning”. We have written a prototype Android app that tries to read blood pressure values from an image of a BP cuff.

Our first attempt had errors below 1% but that was with 2200 of our own training images. We want to make it more general so that it works with different cuffs in different locations, under different lighting, etc. To do that we need a LOT more data. We would be excited if you could load our app, take a dozen pictures of BP cuffs and use the app to send them to us (the more the better!).

Our app is available at http://www.swanamb.com/ml

We welcome your comments, questions, and feedback. And feel free to share this with your colleagues.

Last night we helped Austin to Trick or Treat around town. He's not mobile but that didn't stop him from having a great time! After visiting his neighbors he stopped in to Swansea Fire Station 2 to see the dispatch, and then went on a whirlwind tour of South Swansea. He met so many friendly people, including some with puppies (which he loved). We visited "the spooky house" and even found a friend he knew! It was a great night and I know Austin and his parents appreciate all your positive comments! (picture posted with permission)

From everyone at SAC we hope you all have a happy and safe Thanksgiving day. Today we're thankful for our friends at the Venus De Milo who have provided our crews with their wonderful turkey feast!

10/28/2017

Congratulations Swansea on your wonderful Gala. We had many friends and family there. We tried to attend but unfortunately our crews had 3 calls during the event, including one AT the Venus! One crew left for a call with Swansea Fire, returned and had to leave their meal for the next call!

10/07/2017

Just to show you how things can change..... The day shift had only two calls, a very light day! The night shift had 4 calls in 40 minutes!! We got help from our great friends in Somerset for one call.

To all of our EMS friends, one of our jobs on every call is to record all of our times (dispatch, en-route, etc). Is your ambulance littered with slips of paper that you can't read? We have made a very simple utility available for you that needs no login or account. Visit http://www.swanamb.com/times and save the page to your phones home screen to use instantly!

What an awesome week we've had! Special thanks to Swansea Ambulance Corps, Christopher Carreiro, Swansea Police Dept Officer Shane Mello, and Town Of Swansea Animal Shelter for graciously donating their time to visit our friends and teach them all about what they do for Swansea! Community Helpers Week was so much fun!!!!! THANK YOU!!

Public Safety never rests. We were in line ready to take part in the annual Memorial Day parade when there was an unfortunate series of medical calls. Today has been a bit busier than average with 8 calls for service.

We wish to thank the organizers of the parade for their hard work, the citizen and students of the year, all the marchers, and especially Swansea Police and all members of Swansea Fire for their continued service to our town.

And finally, we will pause to remember the contributions and dedication of every Swansea service-member, past and present, to the protection of our freedoms.

05/05/2017

We have a double helping of great news tonight! After more than a year of hard work, classes, hospital time, ride time, mentoring, studying, reviewing, flash cards, pizza, practice, getting it wrong, and then getting it right. We're excited for two of our members who have made the transition from EMT Basic to Paramedic! Congratulations to Ronda and Des!! We're very happy for you and we could not be prouder of your accomplishments.

Thanks to everyone that came out tonight (this was about half of the gang). We hosted Dr. Ryan McTaggart from Rhode Island Hospital and he gave an impassioned and informative lecture about a state of the art stroke treatment. SAC will always do whatever it takes to provide the best possible medical care to residents.

02/10/2017

We know a lot of you are outside shoveling right now. Please remember two important things. Shoveling is strenuous and you're not as young as you used to be! Do NOT ignore any chest pain! Take a break and let someone else finish.

Second, don't forget to shovel out your neighborhood fire hydrant!

What do the following all have in common?

1. Sick person
2. Hypoglycemia
3. Fall from roof
4. Hypoglycemia
5. COPD (Difficulty breathing)
6. Medical Alarm
7. Dehydration
8. Shortness of Breath
9. Phsychological crisis
10. Fall down stairs
11. Elderly Fall
12. Elderly Fall
13. Severe Pain
14. Extensive Bleeding
15. Hypothermia / Cold Exposure

These were fifteen different medical emergencies that happened on one busy day in Swansea! The only thing that these events share is that they all could be relatively minor or they could be immediate life threatening emergencies. Every call begins with "Hi, I'm from the Swansea Ambulance. What's going on today?" Our members take this very seriously even if callers or bystanders think "oh it's probably nothing." Each team is trained to gather critical medical information quickly, and use their clinical judgement to answer our most important question: "What is best for my patient?"

In previous posts we have mentioned our Opiate Overdose Emergency Response program (http://www.swanamb.com/main/overdose). The goal of this program is to train families to identify a life threatening overdose emergency, know how to obtain and use Narcan, and how to perform CPR.

Narcan (Naloxone) is available from Pharmacies without a prescription under a standing order. The cost may be covered under your insurance and that includes Mass Health.

Tonight we held a seminar for our members on the topic of Cardio Cerebral Resuscitation. This is a modification to CPR during cardiac arrest that de-emphasizes intubation and breathing. SAC has been participating this study for over 6 years. We are one of only about 2 dozen services in the Commonwealth participating in this research.

Nationally, survival rates are below 10%. We learned that our survival rates are over 40%! We are proud to take part in this study and happy that Swansea residents directly benefit from our participation!!

Swansea Ambulance Corps Training Academy

This is fantastic news! We can now train our own EMT Basics! This is the first step in any rewarding EMS career. Some may go on to become Paramedics, others may pursue other medical fields. They will all have an opportunity to volunteer in their community at SAC. Scholarships are available to Swansea residents.

We look forward to greeting SAC graduating class #1 this spring!!

Swansea Ambulance Corps. Training Academy is very proud to announce class dates for our accredited EMT program. We just got some fantastic news a few minutes ago. It's now two days in a row that we can say we are very proud of a SAC member who has successfully completed his program and we can now refer to him as Paramedic Alex Begin!!

What's even better than this is that Alex has been riding with SAC since he was 15 years old! It's been a pleasure to watch and work with him over the past 6+ years! Congratulations Alex!

01/04/2017

It takes nearly a year of school, plus hundreds of hours of clinical hospital time and ride time on the ambulance to become a paramedic, almost always while working at least one full time job. Doing this requires dedication and tremendous effort. We are always so proud when one of our EMTs achieves this goal. And we are happy today to announce that Sarah Mattson is now fully recognized as a Paramedic! Congratulations to you Sarah from all the staff and members of SAC!!!!

12/14/2016

We just completed day three of CPR/AED training for all Case High Seniors. Today they learned how to combine the individual skills (chest compression and breathing) and added the use of an AED. Swansea was the first community in MA and may still be the only town that makes this training a graduation requirement! Bravo to all Seniors, you worked hard today!

SAC

I'm saddened to announce that in the last 10 minutes both Swansea ambulances have been dispatched to two different drug overdoses. Both were reported as "Not breathing". We respond aggressively to these calls because we have to, but some times that is not enough. Family members must be able to provide CPR and be able to administer the life saving drug Narcan.

SAC will be sending a letter to every house in Swansea. THIS IS NOT A FUNDRAISER. It contains a reference card with links to local resources that can help families in crisis. This includes a link to our Opiate Overdose Emergency Response program where families can learn what to do in an overdose emergency. This will be scheduled in a private 1 on 1 class and is free.

There is an epidemic of overdoses in MA and Swansea is not immune. Someone you know is directly affected by this crisis. Please open and save the card when you receive it. Please contact us if you have any questions.

This is a preliminary announcement of a new Swansea Ambulance Corps program and is subject to change.

SAC is developing a "Holiday Transportation" program to help one or two residents with transportation on a major holiday. For this Halloween we are interested in helping a child who, for medical reasons, is unable to "Trick or Treat" in their neighborhood. We will use our spare ambulance, equipment, and volunteer staff to safely transport the child door to door through their neighborhood.

For Thanksgiving, we are interested in finding a senior resident who is currently living in a nearby nursing facility and who is unable due to medical or mobility reasons is unable to attend a family gathering in Swansea. We will transport the family member safely to and from the family event.

Please consider contacting us if you think you may have a child or senior candidate for these holidays.
