Swansea Fire Deptartment Lieutenant Chris Hajder (left) and Firefighter Jonah Perry attended the New England Fire Chiefs' annual conference at Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. The pair was able to benefit from participating in many training sessions and opportunities including a Recruiting and Retention Seminar. The Swansea Fire companies are all volunteer and member staffed. Community members do not need to take the municipal exam to become a volunteer firefighter in Swansea. Applying to become a firefighter requires a simple application to get the process started. The demand for blood is high and the supply of blood is low. If you cannot attend this event next month, please consider making a blood donation locally, before Spetember 11, as part of this Massachusetts Department of Fire Services event.

One month from today, DFS and the American Red Cross of Massachusetts will hold a blood drive as we observe the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Every drop of blood that helps surgery patients, accident victims, and firefighters battling cancer comes from donors; on the day we recognize so many who gave so much, this is one small sacrifice that almost all of us can make. We expect a large number of donors, so please use the QR code to register!

It's true. A vehicle can create heat just like your oven. Never leave any person or an animal in a parked vehicle for even a short period of time. Even with windows slightly open, a vehicle can create enough heat to cause injury or even death.

This is how hot can it get inside a car on a summer day. But it's not just hot enough to cook S'mores -- it's hot enough to cause heatstroke and even death for kids, pets, and vulnerable adults. Never leave them unattended in a vehicle, not even with the window cracked, not even for "just a minute."

If you see a child or animal alone in a hot vehicle, call 9-1-1. If they are in distress due to heat, get them out as quickly as possible and call 9-1-1 immediately. Read more via NHTSA: https://www.nhtsa.gov/campaign/heatstroke

High temperatures return for much of Massachusetts over the next few days. 🌡️

• Try to avoid spending time outdoors in the afternoons, when temperatures will be highest. ☀️
• Wear light-weight, light-colored clothing. 👕
• Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in the shade. 🌳
• Know the signs of heat-related illness and call 911 for emergencies. ☎️
• Never leave pets or children alone in a vehicle. 🚗

If you don't have air conditioning at home, check with local officials or call Mass211 to find available cooling centers.

Grilling season is in full swing. Take time to place your grill in a location away from your home or other potential hazards. Remember, a clean grill can help prevent flare ups or dangerous flames. Keep a spray bottle with water close by when grilling to control flames.

Cooking outside this weekend? Grill fires are most common in these warmer months, but the good news is that they fell by about 30% last year!
