🚨 PUBLIC NOTICE — SWAYZEE DAYS ROAD CLOSURE

The Swayzee Police Department is advising residents, visitors, and motorists of a temporary road closure associated with Swayzee Days on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

E. Lyons Street will be closed to vehicle traffic from S. Taylor Street to Washington Street/SR 13 from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM.

The closure is necessary to allow vendors, event activities, and pedestrian traffic to safely utilize the area due to West Park being flooded.

Motorists are asked to plan ahead, use alternate routes, and follow all posted road closure signs and directions from event personnel and law enforcement.

Please be aware of increased pedestrian and vehicle activity in the surrounding area throughout the event. Drivers are encouraged to use extra caution and remain alert for pedestrians, vendors, and emergency personnel.

We appreciate the cooperation and patience of our residents and visitors as we work to help ensure Swayzee Days remains a safe and enjoyable event for everyone.

The Swayzee Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the Lynn Police Department and the family, friends, and loved ones of Town Marshal Brad Fisher following his tragic End of Watch.

The loss of a law enforcement officer is felt far beyond the borders of the community they served. It is a heartbreaking reminder of the sacrifices made by those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Marshal Fisher’s family, his fellow officers, the Lynn Police Department, and everyone whose lives he touched during this incredibly difficult time. May they find strength, comfort, and peace in the love and support of those around them.

Please keep Marshal Fisher’s family and the entire Lynn Police Department in your prayers as they mourn the loss of a devoted public servant, a respected colleague, and a brother in blue.

Rest easy, Marshal Brad Fisher. Your watch has ended, but your service, dedication, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

🎆 FIREWORKS ORDINANCE REMINDER 🎆

As we celebrate Independence Day, the Swayzee Police Department would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July! We also want to remind residents that the Town of Swayzee has a local ordinance regulating the use of consumer fireworks.

Fireworks are only permitted during the following times:

🇺🇸 June 29, June 30, July 1, July 2, July 3, July 5, July 6, July 7, July 8, & July 9
🕔 From 5:00 PM until two (2) hours after sunset

🇺🇸 July 4
🕙 From 10:00 AM until 12:00 Midnight

🎉 New Year’s Eve (December 31)
🕙 From 10:00 AM until 1:00 AM on January 1

Please remember:
✅ Fireworks may only be used on your own property or on property where you have the owner’s permission.
✅ Fireworks must be used safely by an adult (18 years of age or older), or under the direct supervision of a responsible adult.
🚫 Fireworks are not permitted in any Town park unless specifically approved by the Town Council for an official town function.

Violations of the Town’s fireworks ordinance may result in a fine of no less than $50 and up to $500.

As you celebrate, please be respectful of your neighbors, veterans, pets, and anyone who may be sensitive to loud noises. We ask everyone to celebrate responsibly so that our officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel can enjoy the holiday with their families whenever possible.

🚨 SWAYZEE POLICE DEPARTMENT SAFETY ALERT 🚨

E-SCOOTERS, E-BIKES, AND BICYCLE TRAFFIC LAW ENFORCEMENT

The Swayzee Police Department would like to address the growing number of complaints we have received regarding juveniles operating electric scooters, electric bicycles, and other motorized bikes on public streets while failing to obey traffic laws.

Last week, officers responded to an injury accident involving a juvenile operating an electric scooter. Thankfully, the injuries were not life-threatening, but the incident serves as a reminder that these devices can cause serious injury when operated carelessly or without following the rules of the road.

Our goal is not to issue citations. Our goal is to educate parents and riders so that every child who leaves home on a bicycle, e-bike, or scooter returns home safely.

🚲 Indiana Law: E-Scooters and Bicycles

Under Indiana law, a person operating an electric scooter has the same rights and responsibilities as a bicyclist.

This means riders must:

✅ Obey all traffic signals and stop signs

✅ Ride in the correct direction of travel

✅ Yield when required

✅ Use proper lighting when riding after dark

✅ Operate in a safe and responsible manner

Whether you are riding a:

• Traditional bicycle

• Electric bicycle (e-bike)

• Electric scooter (e-scooter)

You are required to obey the same traffic laws that apply to all roadway users.

⚡ Know Your E-Bike Laws

Indiana recognizes three classes of electric bicycles:

Class 1

• Pedal-assist only

• Maximum assisted speed of 20 MPH

Class 2

• Throttle-assisted

• Maximum speed of 20 MPH

Class 3

• Pedal-assist only

• Maximum speed of 28 MPH

To be considered a legal electric bicycle in Indiana, the bike must:

✔ Have fully operable pedals

✔ Have a motor rated at 750 watts or less

✔ Meet the requirements of Class 1, 2, or 3

⚠️ Not Every Electric Bike Is Actually an E-Bike

Many of the vehicles officers are observing around town are electric dirt bikes or high-powered electric motorcycles that do not meet Indiana’s legal definition of an e-bike.

If the vehicle:

❌ Does not have operable pedals

❌ Exceeds the legal e-bike classifications

❌ Is designed primarily as a motorcycle or dirt bike

It may be considered a motor vehicle under Indiana law and may require registration, insurance, and a licensed operator.

Parents should carefully review the specifications of any electric-powered vehicle before allowing their child to operate it on public streets.

🚔 Increased Enforcement

Due to the number of complaints received and recent injury accidents, the Swayzee Police Department will be increasing enforcement efforts involving:

• Stop sign violations

• Failure to yield

• Riding against traffic

• Reckless operation

• Unlawful operation of electric dirt bikes and other motorized vehicles on public roadways

Officers will continue educating riders whenever possible, but enforcement action may be taken when violations create a safety hazard.

Please take a few minutes to discuss roadway safety with your children.

The rules of the road apply whether they are riding a bicycle, e-bike, or electric scooter. Understanding these rules can prevent serious injuries and save lives.

The Swayzee Police Department wants every child to enjoy riding around town safely—and make it back home to their parents at the end of the day.

🚨 **ATTENTION SWAYZEE TOWN RUMMAGERS** 🚨

As we kick off the Swayzee Town Rummages, the Swayzee Police Department would like to remind everyone about parking restrictions on E. Cole Street near the intersection of State Road 13/Washington Street.

Please **do not park on the roadway, alongside the roadway, or partially on the grass and roadway** from State Road 13 east on E. Cole Street to the intersection of S. Sims Street. Parking is permitted off the edge of the roadway after S. Sims Street.

We also ask that you please be respectful of residents and their property:

✅ Do not park on private property without permission.
✅ Do not block driveways or mailboxes.
✅ Do not park in front of fire hydrants.

This area has consistently presented challenges during the town rummages. Our goal is not to discourage residents from hosting rummages or customers from attending. Rather, our priority is ensuring the safety of everyone participating in this community event.

To accomplish this, we **must keep the entrance to this addition clear for emergency vehicles at all times**. While it is not our intention to issue citations or tow vehicles, parking regulations in this area will be enforced as necessary to maintain safe access throughout the event.

We hope everyone enjoys their visit to Swayzee and has a great time shopping the town rummages. Please drive carefully, watch for increased pedestrian traffic and golf carts, and help us make this a safe and enjoyable event for everyone.

🚨 Swayzee Police Department – 2026 Golf Cart Permits 🚨

It’s that time of year again! The Swayzee Police Department is now issuing 2026 Golf Cart Permits for residents who plan to operate golf carts or ORV’s on town streets.

To stay safe and legal, all golf carts operated within town limits must be properly permitted each year.

✅ How to Obtain Your 2026 Permit:
• Stop by the Swayzee Town Hall during normal business hours: Monday thru Thursday 9am - 4pm, and on Friday 9am - 12pm.
• Bring proof of insurance
• Ensure your golf cart meets all required safety equipment standards

💡 Important Reminders:
• Permits must be renewed annually
• Operators must be a valid licensed driver
• Valid insurance policy
• Follow all traffic laws just like any other vehicle
• Stay alert and watch for pedestrians, especially as warmer weather approaches
