Each April, communities across the country recognize National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Between changing the song, checking your phone, or picking up a dropped French fry, there are more distractions than ever on the road these days.

During April, we pause to remember to raise awareness about one of the most preventable dangers on our roads. Distracted driving continues to be a leading cause of accidents nationwide, putting drivers, passengers, and pedestrians at risk. Law enforcement agencies use this month to remind the public that even a moment of inattention can have serious consequences.

Distracted driving isn’t limited to texting. Law enforcement officers see firsthand the impact these small decisions can have, and the goal is simple: keep everyone safe by staying focused.

Here are four key tips to help prevent distracted driving:

1. Put the Phone Away
Texting, scrolling, or even checking notifications can wait. Silence your phone or place it out of reach before you start driving to eliminate temptation.

2. Set Up Before You Go
Adjust your mirrors, climate controls, music, and navigation system before hitting the road. Taking care of these tasks ahead of time prevents unnecessary distractions while driving.

3. Stay Mentally Engaged
Driving requires your full attention. Avoid multitasking like eating, applying makeup, or turning around to attend to passengers. Staying mentally focused helps you react quickly to changing road conditions.

4. Speak Up and Set the Example
If you’re a passenger and notice unsafe behavior, say something. Parents and guardians should model safe driving habits from the beginning.

Distracted driving is preventable, and every safe choice makes a difference. During National Distracted Driving Awareness Month everyone can use a reminder to stay alert, stay focused, and help keep our roads safe for everyone.

On March 24, 2026, the Sweet Springs Police Department proudly partnered with Sweet Springs R-IV Schools to celebrate the graduation of our 5th-grade D.A.R.E. students.

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program continues to play an important role in educating young students about making safe and responsible decisions, building confidence, and resisting peer pressure.

We are extremely proud of all the students for their hard work, participation, and commitment throughout the program. Their efforts reflect strong character and a bright future ahead.

Congratulations to our 5th-grade graduates on a job well done!

We would also like to thank Sweet Springs R-IV Schools, staff, and families for their continued support in helping make programs like D.A.R.E. a success in our community.

🎉 **Ride Your ATV to School Day** 🎉

Sweet Springs students are invited to participate in **Ride Your ATV to School Day**! We are excited to see our community come together for what should be a fun event.

As always, **safety is our top priority.** If you choose to participate, please remember the following requirements:

✅ **Helmets and proper safety equipment must be worn at all times.**
✅ **All traffic laws and driving rules must be followed.**
✅ **No passengers are allowed on ATVs.**

Our officers will be present to help ensure everyone gets to and from school safely. As long as you are riding responsibly, wearing proper safety gear, and following Missouri traffic laws, this should be a safe and enjoyable day for participating students.

Another case crossed the desk today.
An official title....... A serious tone...... A demand that didn’t leave room to think.
That’s how the con works!
Government impersonation scams don’t rely on technology alone they rely on fear and authority. When pressure replaces process, it isn’t legitimate.
Remember the rule that ends this case fast:
Real government officials don’t conduct business through texts, emails, or social media—and they never demand payment through crypto, gift cards, or mailed checks.
