Each April, communities across the country recognize National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Between changing the song, checking your phone, or picking up a dropped French fry, there are more distractions than ever on the road these days.
During April, we pause to remember to raise awareness about one of the most preventable dangers on our roads. Distracted driving continues to be a leading cause of accidents nationwide, putting drivers, passengers, and pedestrians at risk. Law enforcement agencies use this month to remind the public that even a moment of inattention can have serious consequences.
Distracted driving isn’t limited to texting. Law enforcement officers see firsthand the impact these small decisions can have, and the goal is simple: keep everyone safe by staying focused.
Here are four key tips to help prevent distracted driving:
1. Put the Phone Away
Texting, scrolling, or even checking notifications can wait. Silence your phone or place it out of reach before you start driving to eliminate temptation.
2. Set Up Before You Go
Adjust your mirrors, climate controls, music, and navigation system before hitting the road. Taking care of these tasks ahead of time prevents unnecessary distractions while driving.
3. Stay Mentally Engaged
Driving requires your full attention. Avoid multitasking like eating, applying makeup, or turning around to attend to passengers. Staying mentally focused helps you react quickly to changing road conditions.
4. Speak Up and Set the Example
If you’re a passenger and notice unsafe behavior, say something. Parents and guardians should model safe driving habits from the beginning.
Distracted driving is preventable, and every safe choice makes a difference. During National Distracted Driving Awareness Month everyone can use a reminder to stay alert, stay focused, and help keep our roads safe for everyone.
