Encountering a wildfire can be a scary moment, but keeping a clear head makes all the difference for a safe and fast response. Your safety is always the top priority!

The more details you can provide, the better equipped emergency responders will be. Here’s what to look for:

🔥 Location: Provide cross-streets, landmarks, or mile markers. Note if it's on a slope or flat ground.

🔥 Size: Estimate the fire's size. Compare it to something familiar, like a car or a house.

🔥 Rate of Spread: Describe how fast the fire is moving. Is it slow, steady, or spreading rapidly?

🔥 Fuel: Identify what is burning. Is it grass, brush, trees, or buildings?

🔥 Smoke and Flames: Describe the color of the smoke and the height of the flames.

🔥 Threat: Note if the fire is moving toward people, homes, or important structures like power lines.

If you see a fire, stay at a safe distance and, if possible, take note of these key details before calling 911.

Forecasters are predicting EXTREMELY cold temperatures are headed to Tennessee starting Sunday and into next week. Falling temperatures mean an increased risk to lives and property. In addition to using working smoke alarms this winter, homeowners can follow these simple fire safety tips.

Remember:

-Keep flammable items like blankets, rugs, or furniture at least three feet away from space heaters and wood stoves.

-Practice a home fire escape plan with your family. Everyone should know two ways out of each room.

-Always turn portable heaters off when leaving a room or going to bed.

-Never use your oven to heat your home.

-Have heating equipment and chimneys inspected every year.

Heating Safety:
-Turn portable heaters (such as space heaters or kerosene heaters) off when you go to bed or leave the room.

-Portable heaters need their space. Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away.

-NEVER use the kitchen oven range to heat your home. In addition to being a fire hazard, it can be a source of toxic fumes.

Generator Safety:
-Lose power? Never use a gas generator inside your home, garage, carport, basement, crawlspace or outside near a window, door or vent. A generator should only be used outdoors at least 15 feet away from buildings. It is dangerous to use a gas or kerosene heater inside a home or other building.

If Your Pipes Freeze:
-Shut off the water immediately. Don’t attempt to thaw pipes without first turning off the main shut-off valve.Thaw pipes with warm air. You can melt the frozen water in the pipe by warming air around it with a hair dryer or space heater. Be sure not to leave the space heater unattended.

-Never attempt to thaw frozen pipes with a blow torch or other open flame.

-Be careful turning water back on. Once pipes are thawed, slowly turn the water back on and double check for any additional cracks and leaks.

🔥🌳 It is wildfire season in Tennessee, which means burn permits are required whenever you burn leaves or natural debris, including hurricane debris.

A few things to note:

🔥 Permits are FREE

🔥 Permits can be obtained online at burnsafetn.org

🔥 If you don't have internet access, you can get a permit Monday thru Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm local time, by calling 877-350-2876

🔥 Some local municipalities have additional burning restrictions and / or alternative burn permit programs, so always check local requirements before burning

🔥 Links to information about burning hurricane debris can be found at burnsafetn.org

Samuel Preston Stamey, age 64, of Tellico Plains, TN, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, August 4, 2025. He is preceded in death by his mother, Effie Marie Stamey brothers, Charlie Stamey, and Davis Bunny Stamey sister, Jena Marie Holt. Sam was a very respected person in Tellico
