Firefighter Spotlight: Fire Marshal James Smith

For more than 18 years, Fire Marshal James Smith has dedicated himself to serving the Sweetwater community.

As the City’s Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Coordinator, James plays an important role in keeping our community safe through fire prevention, inspections, emergency planning and public education.

But some of his most memorable work happens in the classroom. For years, James has led fire prevention programs in our local schools, becoming a familiar and trusted face to generations of Sweetwater students. His enthusiasm, sense of humor and genuine passion for teaching help turn important fire safety lessons into something kids will remember.

James also serves as Chaplain for the Sweetwater Fire Department and is active in his church, where his faith and heart for serving others continue beyond the fire station.

Above all, James treasures time with his wife, Mary, and their three daughters. His commitment to his family, his community and serving others is evident in everything he does.

Thank you, James, for more than 18 years of dedicated service and for the impact you continue to make on the next generation of Sweetwater. We’re proud to have you as part of the Sweetwater Fire Department.

Not every vacant building is simply torn down.

Before certain dilapidated structures are demolished, they have one final purpose: helping prepare Sweetwater firefighters for the emergencies they respond to every day.

Here's how the process works:

🏚️ City of Sweetwater, Texas Government Code Enforcement identifies structures that may be considered dilapidated and works with property owners to bring them into compliance whenever possible.

🤝 If compliance cannot be achieved, the property is presented to the Sweetwater City Council for consideration. If the Council declares the structure dilapidated, it is scheduled for demolition.

🚒 Before demolition begins, and only when it can be done safely, Sweetwater firefighters may use the structure for hands-on training. These realistic environments allow crews to practice search techniques, hose deployment, ventilation, forcible entry, firefighter safety, and other critical skills in ways that simply can't be replicated in a classroom.

It's a win-win for our community: Firefighters gain valuable real-world training while the City continues its efforts to remove unsafe structures and improve our neighborhoods.
