Calling all heroes — National Night Out is coming to Sweetwater!

Join us Tuesday, October 6, from 6–8 p.m. at the Nolan County Coliseum parking lot for an evening celebrating the Heroes of Our Community.

This year, we’re putting a superhero spin on National Night Out with family fun, free activities, giveaways and a chance to connect with local law enforcement, first responders and community organizations.

Want to be part of the action? Businesses, churches, organizations and civic groups can still register for a FREE booth. Get creative with the superhero theme and help us make this year’s event one to remember!

National Night Out is coming back to Sweetwater!

Recently, the Sweetwater Police Department was honored to welcome the Sweetwater County-City Library Summer Story Hour!

It was a great opportunity to connect with local families and share important safety information in a fun, interactive way. Attendees met with Sweetwater Animal Control, learned about firearm safety, and talked with officers about when to call 911, and just as importantly, when to use the non-emergency line.

Thank you to the Sweetwater County-City Library for inviting us to be part of this great summer tradition. We always enjoy opportunities to educate, engage, and help keep our community safe.

We hate having to make posts like this, but we need your help.

Due to increased littering and trash left throughout the area, the Lake Sweetwater Spillway is now closed to the public until further notice.

Much of the recent trash was left following Fourth of July festivities, but littering at the spillway has become an ongoing issue. This area belongs to our community, and leaving behind cans, bottles, food containers and other trash is not only unacceptable, it impacts the lake, wildlife and everyone who works to keep Lake Sweetwater clean.

If you have information regarding littering at the lake or spillway, please contact the Sweetwater Police Department non-emergency line at (325) 236-6686.

We all have a part to play in taking care of the places we enjoy. Please pick up after yourself, respect our public spaces and help us keep Lake Sweetwater beautiful.

🚨 STORM SIREN TEST TODAY AT 11 A.M. 🚨

The regularly scheduled storm siren test will occur today at 11 a.m. We understand severe weather moved through our area last night and want to remind residents that today's sirens are ONLY A TEST. No action is required. Again, this is a scheduled test only.

🎆 Should I Call 911? 🤔

The Fourth of July is one of the busiest times of the year for first responders, and we want to make sure emergency lines stay open for those who truly need them.

If you're ever unsure whether a situation is an emergency, take a look at our handy guide. It might even give you a laugh while helping you know when it's time to pick up the phone.

This Independence Day, help us keep 911 available for life-threatening emergencies so our police officers, firefighters, and EMS crews can respond as quickly as possible when every second counts.

While fireworks are a Fourth of July tradition for many families, they are not permitted within Sweetwater city limits, and for good reason.

With hot temperatures and dry conditions, a single firework can quickly ignite grass, fences, or nearby property. Fireworks also send emergency crews away from other calls, can cause serious injuries, and may be frightening for veterans, pets, young children, and neighbors trying to enjoy a safe holiday.

This year, skip the backyard fireworks and join the community for Sparks in the Park at Newman Park after dark. Enjoy a professional fireworks display with family and friends without the added risk to our neighborhoods.

Help us make this a safe and memorable Independence Day for everyone. Thank you for doing your part to protect our community.

Reminder: Consumer fireworks are prohibited within Sweetwater city limits. Violations may result in confiscation of fireworks and/or a citation.

Suspect Fatally Shot During Officer-Involved Shooting

On Monday, June 15, 2026, at approximately 2:20 a.m., officers with the Sweetwater Police Department were conducting routine patrol when an officer's vehicle was struck by gunfire. Officers exchanged fire with the suspect, who then fled the area on foot.

The suspect, later identified as 18-year-old Airick Iriarte, was subsequently located behind a vehicle under a residential carport. Additional officers responded, and gunfire was exchanged. Iriarte was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, per standard procedure. The case has been forwarded to the Texas Rangers office for further investigation. No additional information will be released at this time.

The Sweetwater Police Department would like to acknowledge the invaluable assistance provided by the Nolan County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety in the handling of this tragic event.
