August Spotlight: Back-to-School Habits & Upgraded Recycling ♻️🎒

With families transitioning into new fall routines, August is the perfect time to build smart disposal habits at home and in our schools.

Three Tips for a Sustainable August:

➡️Toss Cold Drink Cups in Recycling: Thanks to expanded processing infrastructure, polypropylene plastic cups (such as iced coffee and cold drink cups marked #5) and paper to-go cups are now accepted in curbside recycling! Ensure they are empty and dry before placing them loose in your cart.

➡️Pack a Waste-Free Lunchbox: As school begins, encourage reusable containers, water bottles, and cloth napkins. Keeping single-use plastic wrap and snack bags out of school bins helps keep organic and recycling streams clean.

➡️Stick to the Core Recycling Rules: Remind students and residents to keep food, liquids, plastic bags, and electronics/batteries completely out of recycling carts.

The Core Goal

Empowering the next generation with simple, effective sustainability practices helps build thriving, resilient communities.

Happy , Sycamore!

♻️Did you know that everyday plastic waste can break down into microplastics that end up in our local watersheds and aquatic environments? Help keep our community’s water clean by saying no to plastic!

💧Water quality is a top priority for Sycamore’s employees, residents, and businesses. We believe the key to continued improvement is ongoing communication between the city and our community. Have a question? Give Public Works a call at 815-895-3545.

🌸 Nancy Marchiando's family and friends visited Sycamore on June 20th to see the memorial planters.

The Nancy Marchiando Memorial Fund was created in collaboration with the Sycamore Beautification Committee. Committee members Cindy Henderson and Alicia Cosky greeted the family, and Cosky related how the memorial fund became established.

The family was impressed by the planters and very grateful that their mother is remembered in such a beautiful manner in downtown Sycamore, a place she dearly loved!

Due to forecasted high temperatures, Waste Management routes will begin approximately one hour earlier than normal, with residential waste and recycling collection starting at 6:00 a.m.

Residents are encouraged to place their carts at the curb the evening before their collection day to help ensure pickup before crews arrive.

Thank you for helping keep collection running smoothly. Stay cool and stay safe! ☀️

Did you know that letting your grass grow a little longer actually helps it survive the summer heat? It reduces evaporation and fights off weeds all on its own. So, before you turn that sprinkler on, go step on your lawn. If it bounces back – your grass is doing just fine! 🌱
