A healthy watershed is something we all have a stake in, and the University of Illinois Extension - Boone, DeKalb and Ogle Counties💧Watershed Steward Program💧 is a great opportunity to learn more about the water resources right here in our community. The program starts ONE WEEK FROM TODAY! This seven-session program is designed for community members who want to deepen their understanding of local watersheds and groundwater, how they relate to the quality and quantity of our drinking water, and how our actions can help preserve this precious resource. Participants will explore the connections between our communities and the water that flows through our landscape while building knowledge that can help them become better watershed stewards. 🌱💧

Whether you’re a farmer, landowner, gardener, conservation professional, or simply someone interested in learning more about caring for soil, water and wildlife, this looks like a wonderful opportunity to learn from one another and make some new connections with our friends at Pasture Grazed Regenerative Farm

We look forward to hosting an Illinois Women in Conservation Field Day on October 9th!

We’ll explore adaptive grazing, virtual fencing, grazing cropland, and integrating cover crops. Rosie will also share the role these practices play in the farm’s direct-to-consumer business model and recent expansion into educational tours and events.

🌽🌱 What do corn, soybeans, glaciers, prairie soils and watersheds have in common? They were all part of the Sycamore Middle School’s Seventh Grade Farm Fieldtrip Day! Grace and Brooke had the opportunity to represent the DeKalb County SWCD hosting a hands-on learning station for students at C & B Farms. Our station took students from the corn plant itself all the way to the bigger picture of agriculture and natural resources. We explored the parts and life cycle of a corn plant, products made from corn and soybeans, some of the top crops grown right here in DeKalb County, and what makes our local soils unique. Students also learned how glaciers and prairie remnants helped shape the soils beneath our feet and how water moves through our landscape and connects us through watersheds. 💧We love opportunities like this because conservation starts with understanding the resources around us. Helping students make connections between the food we grow, the soil beneath our feet, and the water that flows through our communities is an important part of building the next generation of conservation stewards. 🌎
A big thank you not only to DeKalb County Farm Bureau , the local farmers, educators and volunteers who made this experience possible, but especially to the students for bringing such great questions and curiosity to our station! 🚜🌽

💧 Water connects us all! We’re excited to share this opportunity from University of Illinois Extension in DeKalb County for community members who want to learn more about our local watersheds, groundwater, and the important role we all play in protecting our water resources. If you’re curious about where our water comes from and how we can be better stewards of it, this will be a great opportunity to learn, ask questions, and connect with others who care about our local environment. 🌱💦

🐟 Fathead Minnows are a popular forage fish commonly stocked in ponds and lakes to provide a reliable food source for larger sport fish. They reproduce quickly and provide an important source of food for Largemouth Bass and other predators, helping support healthy growth throughout the fish community. In well-managed waters, Fathead Minnows typically grow to 2–3 inches and can establish strong populations when habitat and conditions are favorable.
