Over the past few weeks, our crews have had the unique opportunity to train inside the former Sycamore Park District Pool building before its scheduled demolition.
While it’s never easy to see a longtime community landmark come down, opportunities like this are invaluable. Real-world structures allow firefighters to sharpen the skills that help us better protect and serve our community when lives and property are on the line.
From the outside, it may look like we’re simply “making a mess,” but every hole cut and every wall breached serves a purpose:
Forcing Doors – Practicing efficient entry into locked or secured buildings when rapid access is needed for fire suppression or rescue.
Breaching Cinder Block Walls – Training for situations where firefighters need to create an emergency escape route, rescue a trapped firefighter, or reach victims following a structural collapse.
Roof Ventilation – Learning how different roof systems are constructed and practicing safe ventilation techniques to release superheated gases, smoke, and fire.
Tool Familiarization – Testing our equipment, understanding each tool’s capabilities, and developing backup plans so we’re prepared if our first option doesn’t work.
There is no substitute for hands-on training in an actual building. Experiences like these build confidence, improve teamwork, and ultimately make us more effective when responding to emergencies in our community.
A sincere thank you to the Sycamore Park District for partnering with us and allowing us to use this facility before its demolition. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to strengthen our skills so we can continue providing the highest level of service to the citizens of Sycamore.
