As the weather warms up, it is important to remember that it is never OK to leave a child alone in a car, not even for a minute. The first Pediatric Hot Car Death for 2026 was reported during
March 2026 in Florida, with an outside temperature of 82 degrees. There have been 2 pediatric hot car deaths in the US so far in 2026 with 31 pediatric hot car deaths in 2025 in the US. Set reminders and always check the back seat.

This week, our hearts are heavy as communities across the country mourn the tragic loss of three children who died after being left in hot cars within just 24 hours. These heartbreaking incidents serve as a painful reminder of how quickly tragedy can happen — and how important it is for all of us to look out for one another.

According to Kids and Car Safety, at least 1,177 children have died in hot cars nationwide since 1990, and more than 7,500 others have survived with injuries ranging from minor to severe. Most children who die in these incidents are age 3 or younger, and in many cases, they were unknowingly left behind by loving, responsible caregivers during moments of distraction or changes in routine.

As we head into the holiday weekend, now is the time for our community to come together in prevention and awareness. Long weekends and schedule changes can increase the risk of children being unintentionally left in vehicles, especially during daycare drop-off routines.

Please remember:
• Always check the back seat before locking your vehicle.
• Place a purse, phone, work badge, or other essential item in the back seat as a reminder.
• If your child is missing, check the vehicle first.
• If you see a child alone in a car, call 911 immediately.

A hot car tragedy can happen to anyone. Awareness, routine checks, and community vigilance can save lives.

As the weather gets warmer, more kids are playing outdoors and visiting
playgrounds-running, jumping, climbing, sliding, and swinging. It is our job to keep kids
safe while at play. Let’s celebrate these 3 things while on playgrounds: kids having
fun, staying active, and remaining safe. As a grandparent, hearing our grandkids say, “1
more time GiGi” when on the playground, gives us such joy.
