We are proud to have Dr. Victoria Herrmann on team Coast Guard!

Appointed as part of the 2021-2022 class of WhiteHouse Fellows, Dr. Herrmann was assigned to the Office of the Commandant. She is on sabbatical from her position as an Assistant Research Professor at Georgetown University and the Managing Director of The Arctic Institute, a nonprofit with a mission to inform policy for a just, sustainable, and secure Arctic, to advise senior Coast Guard leaders on climate change resilience as well as learn from military leaders. The prestigious White House Fellowship program embeds professionals from diverse backgrounds for a year of working as a full-time, paid fellow for White House staff, Cabinet Secretaries, and other senior government officials.

“I’m humbled and honored to join USCG as a White House Fellow. I believe that building climate resilience requires sustained action at the national level, but my experience is largely limited to working with sub-national governments. Learning how USCG supports the safety of coastal communities facing more floods, fires, and hurricanes will provide an unparalleled complement to my time working at the grassroots level. After the program, I will continue working with communities most vulnerable to climate impacts, and be better prepared to partner with federal officials like those in USCG.”

Coast Guardsman William E. Leonard, machinist's mate second class, earned his bottle of beer. The beer was passed out on the beach of Guadalcanal. Coast Guardsman Leonard, serving on an assault transport, had participated in seven invasions; North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Kwajalein and Eniwetok in the Marshalls, Aitape in Dutch New Guinea, and the Admiralties. Leonard's only comment between gulps was: "It's a long time between beers." (US Coast Guard photo and caption)
