A Heat Advisory is in effect today through Friday for the entire Quad State area, due to a prolong heatwave. Temperatures will be in the upper 90s to around 100 with heat index values approaching 105 degrees!

Symsonia Fire department responded to assist Viola-North Graves and Melber Fire department on an early morning structure fire. Our combined efforts prevented the exposures from also becoming involved.

We are thankful for our excellent working relationships with our nearby departments and our renewed mutual aid agreements.

Today firemen spent countless hours cleaning up the station and maintaining and upgrading equipment. Our volunteers are always training, maintaining equipment, and staying ready to answer the call when you need us most.

Still seeing some strong, straight-line wind gusts showing up on radar across mainly western KY as of 1:15 am. Could easily see gusts to 60 mph damaging wind gusts with the storms over the next hour or so.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been extended in time through 5 am and trimmed for a few SEMO counties. Damaging winds will be the main threat.

Across the country, volunteer fire departments are facing a serious staffing challenge—and Symsonia is not alone. Fewer people are stepping forward to serve, even as emergency calls and the demands of modern firefighting continue to grow.

🚒 Volunteer Firefighters Are Needed—Now More Than Ever 🚒
Volunteer fire departments are the backbone of many small towns and rural communities, but nationwide, departments are struggling to recruit and retain members.

Since 2008, the U.S. volunteer fire service has lost nearly a quarter of its members—dropping from about 827,000 volunteers to roughly 635,000 in 2023. During that same period, fire department call volume increased about 70%.

This shortage is not because our communities need us less. It is because today’s volunteers face busy work and family schedules, more extensive training requirements, and the physical and emotional demands of emergency service. Many people also simply do not realize that they can volunteer or that their local department needs help.

At Symsonia Fire Department, we are proud of those who answer the call, train hard, and serve their neighbors. But we need more people willing to step up.

You do not have to be an expert to begin. We provide training, equipment, mentorship, and a chance to make a real difference close to home.
