Did you know that before becoming a federal holiday, Memorial Day was observed every year on this date - May 30? First held in the years after the Civil War, it was originally known as “Decoration Day” because people gathered together to remember those who died serving our country and place flowers on their graves.

County Executive Ryan McMahon attended the county's official Memorial Day service at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery. We must always remember and honor those we have lost.

Former County Executive Joanie Mahoney was the driving force behind the Amp project, so it is fitting her name is on it. Check out these photos: County Executive Ryan McMahon took members of Taiwan’s Chiayi City Council on a tour of the new Harborview Aquarium. Chiayi City is Syracuse’s sister city and while in Onondaga County the group also toured the Micron Technology site in Clay. This visit highlights our strong international partnership and shared commitment to cultural and economic growth.

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon marked Memorial Day by walking in parades in the villages of Camillus, Minoa and Jordan. Following Minoa’s parade he spoke at a service at Village Hall where he reminded everyone that would not be celebrating its 250th anniversary this year had it not been for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country - and we must always remember and honor them.
