he Syracuse Housing Authority, Neighborhood Solutions, Inc., Lemoyne Center for Aging Resources & Enrichment (CARE), Brady Faith Center, Meals on Wheels of Syracuse, and PEACE, Inc. are excited to invite you to the 5th Annual Neighborhood Health & Wellness Fair (NHWF) on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Meals on Wheels of Syracuse (formerly Brady Market), 307 Gifford Street, Syracuse, NY 13204.

This year's event will be bigger than ever as we celebrate five years of connecting residents with valuable health, wellness, education, and community resources. We're also excited to welcome PEACE, Inc. as a new partner, providing a Back-to-School Supplies Giveaway to help local children and families prepare for the new school year.

The event is free and open to the public and will feature:

🎓 Educational workshops and demonstrations
🤝 Community organizations and service providers
🎉 Family-friendly activities and giveaways

The Syracuse Housing Authority is proud to announce the installation of a commemorative bench outside the Gladys Smith Center at 328–330 Fabius Street, honoring the extraordinary life and legacy of Gladys J. Smith.

A lifelong Syracuse resident, Ms. Smith's family was among the first to move into the James Geddes public housing community in the 1950s, where she remained a proud resident throughout her life. Her passion for serving others led her through a remarkable career in public service, healthcare, and community advocacy, always working to create greater opportunities for low-income families across Syracuse.

For more than 20 years, Ms. Smith faithfully served on the Syracuse Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, including as both Chair and Vice Chair. She was a tireless champion for affordable housing, resident safety, neighborhood revitalization, and programs that improved the lives of children, seniors, and families throughout our community. Beyond SHA, she dedicated her time to numerous local organizations, mentoring others and advocating for meaningful change wherever she served.

Throughout her lifetime, Ms. Smith helped advance initiatives that strengthened public housing communities, expanded affordable housing opportunities, improved neighborhood safety, supported youth programs and scholarships, and gave a voice to residents across Syracuse. In recognition of her decades of service, she was honored during the Syracuse Housing Authority's 75th Anniversary Gala as one of the individuals whose leadership made a lasting difference in our community.

Following her passing on February 7, 2023, her legacy continues to inspire all of us. Donated by the Syracuse Housing Authority, this bench serves as a permanent tribute to a woman whose compassion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to residents helped shape our agency and our city.

Thank you, Ms. Gladys Smith, for a lifetime of service. Your impact will never be forgotten. 💙
