It’s Older Americans Month! A time to celebrate the contributions of older adults in our community and raise awareness for issues many of us may face as we age. Here at IFW we would like to take a minute to highlight the dedication, drive, and volunteer service of Sue!
Sue has been a volunteer with the One-to-One Program and has been a friend to resident Linda for about 5 years. She decided to volunteer once she became an empty-nester and says she was drawn to the mission of InterFaith Works and the Center for Healthy Aging as she became more sensitive to the rights and needs of older adults. What started as friendly phone calls during the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic has turned into a tight bond. Sue and Linda meet weekly – crafting, chatting, and even planning Linda’s birthday celebration a few weeks ago!
To Sue, aging well means eating well, laughing a lot, and maintaining connections with others. Friendship and having people standing with you gives you the courage to do hard things. However, Sue acknowledges that isolation and accessibility are issues that many older adults can face. She urges others to be patient and understanding when communicating with others who may have difficulty hearing and ensure that there are places of community where people of all ages and abilities can connect with each other.
Outside of her service, Sue enjoys crafting and being around her family. We want to thank Sue for her tremendous service, leadership, and collaborative spirit. We’re so happy to have you as part of our volunteer team and an advocate for older adults!
