We're early in , so today we'll focus on our education and advocacy efforts for the Deaf and hard of hearing community. With inclusion at the very core of our human existence, we leverage our education and inclusion efforts increase a sense of belonging to the broader community for our Deaf and hard of hearing friends. We go about this via:

🧑‍💻 Community presentations, including the popular "Deaf That" series focusing on issues related to deafness, Deaf culture, and more

It's fair to say this one is near and dear to our hearts! Today, we flip the calendar to September 1st, the beginning of National Deaf Awareness Month. At its core, the month is intended to educate the public about the experiences of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community, advocate for equal access, and celebrate Deaf culture - all things we actively engage in year-round here at AURORA!

We are barely a month and a half out from our biggest event of the year, "An Evening for the Eyes and Ears!" We return to Rosamond Gifford Zoo for this year's edition at 6:00 pm on Friday, October 16th. We can't wait to:

Big thanks to our friends at United Way of Cayuga County for having us be part of their "Taste of United Way" event yesterday at the Hilton Garden Inn - Auburn, NY! Visitors to our table had the chance to learn about our services and conduct some hands-on blindfolded activities such as using a liquid level indicator and a signature guide! 🙌

One of the more rewarding efforts we embark upon here at AURORA includes going out into the community and helping fellow organizations better serve those who are blind or visually impaired. Our longtime partners at S**T Van in Auburn serve Cayuga County residents who are 60 years and older as well as disabled individuals of all ages at low to no cost. That's where we come in. We're proud to provide annual training to help this wonderful service provide exceptional care for their passengers who are blind or visually impaired. We even managed to sneak in a few laughs along the way - thank you for hosting us and your continued partnership!

The series is a partnership with Onondaga County Public Libraries and the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County creating an inclusive learning environment for people of all hearing abilities at libraries across the county.

We often get asked about how someone can start training for a career in American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture. Earlier this summer, SUNY New Paltz rolled out a new undergraduate degree in Deaf Studies - the first of its kind to be offered at a public university in New York!
