The hardest step is usually the first one.

Not the training. Not the meetings. Not the time commitment. Just starting.

Once you take that first step, everything else becomes a lot clearer. You don't have to have it all figured out. You don't have to know if it's the right fit, or whether you'll love it, or where it might lead. You just have to show up once.

That's it. One meeting. One conversation. One foot in the door.

We've seen it happen again and again. Someone walks in unsure, a little nervous, maybe even convinced they're not cut out for this. And then something clicks. They meet the crew. They see what we do. And the next thing they know, they're part of something bigger than themselves.

If you've ever thought about joining Syracuse Rescue Squad, this is your sign. Send us a message or come to a meeting. We'll take it from there. 🚑

🌡️ ANSWER TIME ☀️

The correct answer is... B) Call 911 and move them to shade.

Here's why:

When someone's skin is hot and dry with no sweating, that's a red flag for heat stroke, not just heat exhaustion. Heat stroke is a medical emergency. The body has lost its ability to cool itself down, and without quick action, it can become life-threatening.

While you wait for help to arrive:

- Move them to a shaded or cool area
- Loosen any tight clothing
- If you have ice packs or cold wet cloths, apply them to the neck, armpits, and groin
- Never force water on someone who is unconscious or unresponsive

Calling 911 first gets trained help on the way while you do what you can on the ground.

Stay cool out there and look out for each other this summer. 😎

A) Give them water to drink
B) Call 911 and move them to shade
C) Wait and see if they wake up on their own

Leave your response in the comments and tomorrow we will tell you the answer.

Member Spotlight: Joey Reisdorff

Role: EMT
Years of Service: 13 years

What inspired you to join the Syracuse Rescue Squad?

My wife was already on the squad along with her parents, and I was "encouraged" to join. Once I got involved, I realized it was something worth being part of and stuck with it. I decided to get my EMT license after a few years of driving too. I try to help our kids understand that when we have to leave quickly, it's because someone else needs help. We hope we're teaching them empathy while also showing them love and support.

What is your favorite part about serving the community through EMS?

Helping people when they're having a bad day and need someone to show up. You can't fix everything, but you can be there and do what you can, and that matters. I know a lot of people in the community from working at the local co-op, and it makes you feel like you owe something back. This is one way I can help.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not on shift?

We have 5 kids, so we're usually staying busy with family life. When we do have downtime, we're out on the boat or golf cart, or I'm tinkering with them, or with Ford Rangers I end up buying and fixing up for the kids to eventually drive. We also shoot basketball in the driveway, play catch in the yard, and I'll golf when I get the chance.

What is something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I can sing. I've been in a few bands over the years, and my wife has even signed me up to sing at weddings and funerals. Even my own wedding, not funeral.

In one sentence, what does being a part of the Syracuse Rescue Squad mean to you?

It means doing something that needs to be done, even when it's not always convenient, and being someone the community can count on when it really matters.

Today we pause to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Memorial Day is more than the unofficial start of summer. It's a day of reflection, gratitude, and honor for the families who carry the weight of that sacrifice every single day.

At Syracuse Rescue Squad, we know what it means to answer a call to serve. We're humbled by those who answered the highest call of all, and we're grateful for the freedoms their sacrifice protects.

Today, we remember. We thank their families. And we honor their legacy by continuing to serve our community with that same spirit of courage and dedication.

To all who have served and to the loved ones of those we've lost, thank you. 🇺🇸💙

Here's a truth every EMS professional knows: no matter how fast we get to a scene, bystanders are almost always there first. That means the people closest to an emergency, often family, friends, or coworkers, can make the biggest difference in those critical first minutes.

That's what Save-A-Life Day is all about. It's a reminder that everyday people can save lives with the right knowledge and a little bit of training.

Two skills in particular can change an outcome before an ambulance ever arrives:
CPR. When someone goes into cardiac arrest, immediate CPR can double or even triple their chance of survival.
Stop the Bleed. Knowing how to control serious bleeding can keep someone alive long enough for help to arrive.

The good news? Both skills can be learned in just a few hours, and free or low-cost classes are available through organizations like the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, and the Stop the Bleed program.

You don't need a uniform to save a life. You just need to be ready.

Have you ever taken a CPR or Stop the Bleed class? Comment if you would be interested in a class at Syracuse Rescue.👇💙

It’s EMS Week 💙

Every May, communities across the country take time to honor the people who answer the call when seconds matter most. It's called National EMS Week, and it started back in 1974 when President Gerald Ford set aside a week to recognize EMS professionals and the lifesaving work they do.

More than 50 years later, the mission is still the same: to say thank you to the EMTs, paramedics, and first responders who show up in our toughest moments.

For our team at Syracuse Rescue Squad, EMS Week reflects what we live out year-round, a commitment to serving our neighbors with skill, compassion, and steady hands.

So if you see one of our members out in the community this week, give them a wave or a quick thank you. It means more than you know.

To everyone who supports Syracuse Rescue Squad, thank you. We're honored to serve you. 💙🚑

You don’t have to be a certain type of person

There’s no one kind of person who fits here. Some of our members are outgoing, some are quiet, and some had medical interest before, but most didn’t.

What they all had in common was simple, they showed up willing to learn and be part of something bigger than themselves.

That’s what matters here.

If you’ve ever thought, “I don’t know if I’d fit,” send us a message. You might be surprised.

Your first shift won’t look like you think. You won’t be thrown into anything, you won’t be expected to know what to do, and you definitely won’t be on your own.

Most of your first shift is simple. You’ll meet the team, see how things run, and start getting familiar with the station, the ambulance, and the flow of a call.

If a call comes in, you’re there to observe and learn, not to lead.

We walk you through everything, step by step, at your pace. Everyone here remembers their first shift, and we make sure you feel welcomed, not overwhelmed.

If you’ve been thinking about trying it out, send us a message. We’ll walk you through exactly what your first shift would look like.
