Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Firefighter Chad Loecker

Firefighter Chad Loecker has proudly served the Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department since 2005, dedicating more than two decades to protecting and supporting the Syracuse community.
Originally from Crofton, Nebraska, Chad chose Syracuse as his hometown because of its strong community values and the importance of having local schools, medical facilities, and services that support families. His decision to join the fire department was driven by a commitment to serve others and give back to the community he calls home.

For Chad, volunteering is about more than responding to emergencies. He enjoys being involved in the community and values the strong camaraderie among the firefighters. He says being able to assist others during times of crisis is one of the most meaningful parts of the role, and he takes great pride in serving others when they need help the most.

One of the things Chad is most proud of is the professionalism and response times of the Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department. The dedication of the team and their ability to work together when it matters most continues to inspire him.

Outside of the department, Chad works as the Chief Operating Officer at Volitant Drone in Dunbar. When he’s not working or responding to calls, he enjoys baseball and all sports, farming, and spending time with family.

Chad and his wife Kem have two adult sons, Tanner and Brandon. He credits his family for always being understanding of the time and commitment that comes with volunteering.

Chad wants residents to know that being a volunteer firefighter is a serious commitment, but it is also incredibly rewarding. He believes the department plays an important role beyond emergency response, supporting the community through fundraising, donations to local causes, and involvement with the local school system.

The Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department is proud to have dedicated members like Chad Loecker who continue to serve their neighbors with professionalism, commitment, and heart.

This afternoon, we have the honor of watching our own Keith McWilliams receive a well-deserved Community Service Award, Rocket Hero, presented by the Senior Class in recognition of his dedication to our community.
Keith’s leadership goes far beyond the fire station. His commitment to service, his focus on strengthening our department, and his drive to continually improve how we protect and support our community are evident in everything he does. From guiding operational improvements to championing firefighter health and safety, he leads by example every single day.
It is especially meaningful to see so many fellow volunteers gathered to support him this afternoon—a reflection of the respect and appreciation we all have for his leadership. The volunteers were also caught off guard by being included in being recognized.
Congratulations, Keith. We are proud of you, grateful for your service, and thankful for the leadership you bring to our department and community. And thank you for

Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Jasper Keran

We’re proud to shine a spotlight on Probationary Firefighter Jasper Keran, a committed member of the Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department. Originally from Nebraska City, Jasper chose Syracuse for its family roots and strong sense of community.

Jasper joined SVFD because of a calling to serve, a desire to follow in family footsteps, and to be a role model for his 5-year-old son. To Jasper, being a volunteer firefighter means more than answering calls — it means dedicating yourself to the community and continually pushing yourself to improve for the good of others.

That dedication is evident in the effort Jasper is putting into his training and development. From attending state structure training burns and a rope rescue class to recently completing his Hazardous Materials Operations Level skills testing, Jasper is demonstrating a serious commitment to becoming the best volunteer firefighter he can be.

Assistant Chief Darin Lintner praised that dedication, noting Jasper’s commitment to education and personal growth reflects the mindset needed to serve at a high level. Darin emphasized that Jasper is showing what it means to continually strive, learn, and challenge yourself to be better — the kind of dedication that strengthens not only an individual firefighter, but the future of the department.

Outside of the department, Jasper works full-time at MK Meats in Unadilla and also takes on contract chef work for major sporting and entertainment events, including at Memorial Stadium. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his son, going to church, and family dinners.

Jasper wants the community to know that volunteers take their training seriously while balancing full lives, and that community support provides the purpose and opportunity to train harder and better.

Thank you, Jasper, for your commitment, drive, and dedication to serving Syracuse.

Volunteer Spotlight: Doug Iske

Meet Doug Iske, a dedicated member of the Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department. Originally from Gretna, Doug chose Syracuse as his hometown after starting his teaching career here 30 years ago.

Doug was inspired from a young age to be a public servant, believing in the constant need to help others. To him, being a volunteer firefighter means "being able to help people when they might need it most." Even when calls happen late at night or during bad weather, he says, "A thing called humanity" keeps him coming back, and he is most proud of the others who volunteer selflessly alongside him.

Outside of the department, Doug is a retired educator who has turned to farming. He enjoys hunting, preserving natural resources, and flying. He and his family, which includes his wife and 9-year-old son, are supported by their understanding of the need for him to sometimes leave family functions.

Doug wants the community to know that they need more young people to stay in the community and be a part of the department. Your support—even a simple "thank you"—is always appreciated.

Last Saturday morning, members of the Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department took part in a valuable live training drill at a rural residence scheduled for demolition. Opportunities like this allow our volunteers to sharpen critical skills for interior fire attack, practice different suppression methods, and work through realistic scenarios that go far beyond “just squirting water on the hot stuff.”

These unique trainings also provide added experience in water shuttle operations, tanker/tender coordination, and pump operations—essential skills in our rural district where many structures lack adequate water supplies and rely on the capabilities of our tanker fleet. Training like this helps ensure our volunteers stay prepared for the challenges they may face when the call comes.

Meet Firefighter Ryan Tonkin in our latest Volunteer Spotlight!

Ryan joined the Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department in 2025 and has been serving our community for one year. Originally from Lincoln, NE, Ryan and his wife chose Syracuse as their home because they both work here. He decided to volunteer because he saw the need and felt he had the capability to help, inspired by mentors like Craig Hemje and Justin Apel.

To Ryan, being a volunteer firefighter means having the ability to help members of the community and serving alongside some great people. Even with late-night calls, what keeps him coming back is responding to people's needs during an unexpected situation.

Outside of the department, Ryan is a real estate and insurance agent for Easter & Associates. When he's not working or on a call, he enjoys time with his wife, Katie, and their three kids (two sons and a daughter), playing golf, hunting, and coaching youth sports.

Ryan wants the community to know that your support, especially donations, makes a huge impact by helping the department obtain the new and necessary equipment to do their job safely and effectively. Thank you, Ryan, for your dedication!

Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department Celebrates Community Support and Ongoing Commitment to Innovation and Safety

The Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) is proud to share the overwhelming success of its first-ever Community Appreciation Event, a new tradition that brought together residents, families, and supporters in a meaningful and memorable way.

Breaking from the department’s long-standing fundraising format, this event was designed to better connect with the community—and the response was extraordinary. With beautiful spring weather, a great live band, outstanding food, and a welcoming setting at Rich Harvest Winery & Vineyard, the event created an atmosphere that truly reflected the strength and spirit of Syracuse and the surrounding district.

Those who attended showed their support in person, while many who could not join still contributed through generous donations. Every aspect of the event reinforced the deep connection between the department and the community it serves.

“We are extremely humbled, thankful, and recharged,” said Fire Chief Keith McWilliams. “The support we received—both at the event and through donations—reminds us that when the call comes in, we have a community standing behind us. That means everything to our volunteers and their families.”

For nearly 140 years, the Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department has protected this community. Generations of families, friends, and neighbors have answered the call, continuing a proud legacy of service. That same spirit drives the department today—not only in emergency response, but in its commitment to innovation, efficiency, and firefighter safety.

SVFD has become known for its creative and resourceful approach to equipment and operations. Through the repurposing and strategic acquisition of apparatus, the department maximizes capability while remaining fiscally responsible. A recent example includes the purchase of a certified pre-owned pumper/tanker from New York, a significant upgrade that replaced multiple aging units with one more efficient and capable apparatus—better suited to the realities of a volunteer response model.

“We take a lot of pride in being good stewards of the resources entrusted to us,” Chief McWilliams said. “Whether it’s repurposing equipment or finding the right apparatus at the right time, our goal is always to provide the highest level of service in the most responsible way possible.”

In addition, the department has implemented uniquely designed grass rigs, generously built by Syracuse Iron Works. These units are tailored specifically to local needs, improving both response effectiveness and firefighter protection during vegetation and wildland incidents—an increasingly critical component of service in the district.

“Our grass rigs are a great example of local innovation,” added Chief McWilliams. “They were built with our district in mind—our terrain, our risks, and our responders. That kind of partnership makes a real difference on the fireground.”

SVFD continues to adapt its response strategies based on call volume, geography, and available personnel, ensuring that response times remain strong across both city and rural areas. This flexibility and commitment to improvement have allowed the department to maintain impressive response times while covering approximately 90 square miles and serving an estimated 4,000 residents.

Looking to the future, the department is also advancing plans for a new Public Safety Building. This proposed facility is centered on the health and safety of its volunteers, addressing long-standing challenges with space, storage, and post-incident decontamination. The new design will allow for proper cleaning and separation of equipment, gear, and personnel following emergency responses—reducing long-term health risks and improving overall readiness.

“Our volunteers give everything they have to this community,” Chief McWilliams said. “It’s our responsibility to make sure they have a facility that protects them as much as they protect others. Proper decontamination, safer workflows, and dedicated space are no longer luxuries—they are necessities.”

Chief McWilliams also emphasized the importance of the department’s history and the individuals who have shaped its evolution.

“When you look at where we are today, it’s because of those who came before us,” he said. “Members like Mike Goering, our longest-serving firefighter, represent the heart of this department. His years of service reflect the evolution of our membership, the changing needs of our community, and the dedication it takes to keep moving forward. That legacy is something we’re incredibly proud of and committed to carrying on.”

Mike Goering echoed those sentiments, reflecting on his years of service and the growth of the department.

“I’ve seen this department change a lot over the years,” Goering said. “What hasn’t changed is the commitment of the people. It’s always been neighbors stepping up to help neighbors, and that’s something special you don’t find everywhere.”

“The equipment has improved, the training has evolved, and the expectations are higher today—but so is the pride,” he added. “We’ve always found a way to adapt and make things work for our community, and that’s what continues to keep this department strong.”

Goering also noted the importance of community involvement, both past and present.

“You don’t have to be on the truck to be part of this department,” he said. “The support we saw at this event—and from those who donated—is no different than what this community has done for decades. That support is what allows us to keep going.”

“This department has always been built on neighbors helping neighbors,” Chief McWilliams added. “Whether you attend events, make a donation, or simply show your encouragement, you are part of what makes this all possible.”

The Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who attended, donated, and supported the Community Appreciation Event, as well as to Rich Harvest Winery & Vineyard and the event’s performers for helping make the day such a success.

With renewed energy and unwavering community support, SVFD remains committed to protecting the district it has proudly served for nearly 140 years—and to continuing that mission for generations to come.

SVFD Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Rookie Grove Dalton IV

Grove Dalton IV joined the Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) as a Rookie in 2026. Although he is originally from Seward, Nebraska, he calls Syracuse his hometown, appreciating that it’s a great place with beautiful scenery. Grove was inspired to volunteer by a family member who was the chief of the Omaha fire department, and he wanted to continue volunteering and helping the community after being a part of the Staplehurst volunteer fire department.

To Grove, being a volunteer firefighter means taking a step to help those who are in need of help, those who just need someone, as well as giving back to the community. He is committed to coming back to calls, no matter the time or weather, remembering the advice from his old teacher to never give up and help those who are in need. What he is most proud of is how the other members made him feel like family when he joined, showing him things he didn’t know how to do.

Outside of the department, Grove works at Casey’s and helps his dad with work around the house. He loves going for walks with his beautiful girlfriend, Alycea, who loves and supports him and his dreams. He also enjoys spending time with his two loving parents, Grove (dad) and Bobbie (mom), who support him by giving him advice and listening to his stories.

Grove wants residents to know that being a volunteer firefighter is hard work and it doesn't come easy, but if you stick with it and put your nose to the grindstone, you can accomplish it. He also shared that community support, through donations and encouragement, helps the department strive to be and get better at their duties.
