140 years ago today, the Syracuse Fire Department lost Chief of Department Philip Eckel. Chief Eckel was the second Chief of the City of Syracuse's newly formed paid fire department. On June 1, 1886, at about 6 a.m., there was a report of an alarm from the corner of Water and Chestnut Streets. Chief Eckel jumped on Hook and Ladder No. 1 as it started out. Chief Eckel was thrown from the vehicle as it crossed the New York Central tracks. He passed from his injuries a few hours later.

SYRACUSE FIREFIGHTERS EXTINGUISH TWO WORKING FIRES IN A MATTER OF HOURS

🔥KELLOGG STREET FIRE🔥

Syracuse, NY – On Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 6:33 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported fire at 227 Kellogg Street. Crews from Station 3 on Bellevue Avenue arrived on scene and found a 2½-story residential structure with smoke coming from a first-floor window. Once crews made entry, they encountered heavy smoke, and a Signal “99” was transmitted, indicating a working fire.

Firefighters stretched hose lines into the structure and located a fire in the living room of a first-floor apartment. While crews extinguished the fire, additional firefighters searched the building for occupants. The fire was brought under control in less than 10 minutes and declared fully extinguished shortly thereafter. Thorough searches confirmed there were no victims inside the building.

The structure contained three residential units, and damage was limited to the apartment of origin. One occupant had exited the building prior to the fire department’s arrival and was transported to Upstate University Hospital for evaluation. Fire Investigators determined the fire originated in the living room of a first-floor apartment. The cause remains under investigation.

Following completion of suppression, investigation, and overhaul operations, the scene was turned back over to the property owner. There were no reported firefighter injuries.

***Firefighters had only recently cleared the Kellogg Street scene when a second reported structure fire was dispatched on Rich Street. The close proximity of the two incidents resulted in many of the same crews responding to both fires.

🔥RICH STREET FIRE🔥

Syracuse, NY – On Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 9:06 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported fire at 213 Rich Street. Crews from Station 3 on Bellevue Avenue arrived on scene and found a 2½-story residential structure with smoke coming from the second floor. A Signal “99” was transmitted, indicating a working fire.

Firefighters advanced hose lines into the structure and began extinguishment operations while additional crews searched for potential occupants. The fire was brought under control in less than 20 minutes and declared fully extinguished before the 30-minute mark. Thorough searches confirmed there were no victims. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

The building was a two-family home that was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The fire damaged portions of the first floor, with the remainder of the structure sustaining minor smoke and water damage. Fire Investigators determined the fire originated in the first-floor dining room. The cause remains under investigation.

Crews remained on scene for more than two hours assisting investigators and conducting overhaul operations to ensure all hidden fire had been extinguished.

NO INJURIES REPORTED IN EARLY MORNING INDUSTRIAL FIRE

Syracuse, NY – On Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 4:01 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported fire at 104 Lynch Street. Crews from Station 10 on East Genesee Street arrived and found an industrial complex with fire involving a jobsite trailer that had extended to a nearby storage building. A Signal “99” was transmitted, indicating a working fire.

Firefighters connected to hydrants and stretched multiple hose lines to begin extinguishment operations. Crews encountered energized power lines and transformers in the immediate area of the fire, requiring additional caution until National Grid secured power to the site. The fire was knocked down in under 20 minutes and declared fully extinguished before the 30-minute mark. Searches of the trailer, storage building, and surrounding area confirmed there were no victims.

The trailer and storage building were part of an operational concrete plant, and both sustained damage from the fire. The quick containment of the fire limited further damage, however the plant will remain inoperable until electrical service is restored. There were no reported civilian or firefighter injuries.

Fire Investigators determined the fire originated in the jobsite trailer. The cause remains under investigation. Crews remained on scene for over an hour, assisting investigators and completing overhaul operations.

SYRACUSE FIREFIGHTERS BATTLE TWO STRUCTURE FIRES IN THE AFTERNOON HEAT

🔥HALL AVENUE FIRE🔥

Syracuse, NY – On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 1:02 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported fire at 118 Hall Avenue. Crews from Station 8 on South Salina Street arrived and found a 1½-story residential structure with smoke showing from the rear of the building. A Signal “99” was transmitted, indicating a working fire.

Firefighters stretched hose lines into the home and quickly located a fire in a rear bedroom while additional crews searched for occupants. The fire was knocked down in under 10 minutes and declared fully extinguished before the 20-minute mark. Searches of the building confirmed there were no victims.

The structure was a single-family home with fire damage limited to the room of origin and smoke and water damage extending to other areas of the residence. Five occupants were displaced and are receiving assistance from friends and family. There were no reported civilian injuries. One firefighter suffered injuries from a fall during fire operations and was transported to the hospital. The firefighter has since been released.

Fire Investigators determined the fire originated in the rear bedroom. The cause was accidental and determined to be an open flame placed too close to combustible materials. Crews remained on scene for over an hour assisting investigators and completing overhaul operations.

🔥CLOVER RIDGE DRIVE FIRE🔥

Syracuse, NY – While crews were still operating at the fire on Hall Avenue, Syracuse Firefighters were alerted at 2:21 p.m. to a reported structure fire at 427 Clover Ridge Drive. Crews from Station 17 on Burnet Avenue arrived to find heavy fire coming from the basement garage area of a one-story residential structure. A Signal “99” was transmitted, indicating a working fire.

Firefighters stretched hose lines to the seat of the fire while additional crews searched for potential occupants. During operations, firefighters had to exercise caution due to live electrical wires that had detached from the structure and were arcing on the ground in front of the residence. The fire was knocked down in approximately 20 minutes and fully extinguished before the one-hour mark. Thorough searches of the structure confirmed there were no victims.

Fire Investigators determined the fire originated in the garage area. The cause remains under investigation. The structure sustained significant damage to the basement and first floor. Two occupants were displaced and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. One occupant was evaluated on scene by EMS but refused transport. There were no injuries to firefighters.

Due to elevated temperatures and several companies having responded to both afternoon fires, additional crews were rotated through the scene during operations. The Syracuse Fire Department’s Medical Emergency Response Vehicle (MERV-1) responded to assist more than 40 firefighters with cooling and medical monitoring during the incident. Crews remained on scene for over two hours, assisting investigators and completing overhaul operations.

Take a moment to look back at last Friday’s graduation ceremony and join us in welcoming the newest members of the Syracuse Fire Department.

After months of training and preparation, these recruits officially begin their careers this week as Syracuse Firefighters. They’ll now join fire companies across the city, learning from experienced crews, serving the community, and beginning the work they’ve trained so hard for.

Congratulations to Recruit Class 2026-1 as they begin this meaningful chapter of public service.
