Current forecasts are for heavy rain with the potential for flooding risk.

Don’t underestimate the power of water. It only takes 6 inches of fast-moving water to knock over and carry away an adult, and 12 inches to carry away a car.

NEVER drive around barricades into floodwaters! More than 50% of all flood fatalities are vehicle-related. It only takes 12 inches of fast-moving water to carry off a small car and 18 inches of water to sweep a larger vehicle away.

Severe storms, some significant, appear likely across portions of southwest and west central Kansas Saturday evening. Latest models indicate two areas of greater focus with the larger signal along/near the I-70 corridor. There is a secondary focus of a significant severe storm or two moving out of southeastern Colorado into far southwest Kansas in the evening. Even though some of the latest models show a relative minimum of risk from roughly Garden City to Dodge City on this map, ALL areas need to be prepared for severe weather Saturday evening. Have a plan of action if severe storms threaten your area and it is a good idea to have multiple sources for latest National Weather Service warning information.

Severe thunderstorms will be possible both late Saturday and late Sunday across southwest Kansas. Strong damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall will be the main hazards both days. Saturday there will also be a small chance for a brief, weak tornado.

Wednesday is expected to be the hottest day this upcoming week, with near record high temperatures of 100-105 expected. The record at Dodge City for June 17th is 104 set multiple years, including 2021.
