Winter Freeze Warning this Weekend! Protect Your Pipes!

Winter Water Pipe Protection

Protecting your plumbing is essential, especially if you live in a single-family home or a townhome. Follow these tips to prevent costly repairs and water damage:

Allow Warm Air to Circulate:
Leave cabinet doors open in your bathrooms and kitchen to allow warm air to circulate around the plumbing. Don’t forget to move household chemicals and cleaners out of the reach of kids and pets.
Let Faucets Drip:
If you have an older home or business with pipes prone to freezing, allow cold water to drip from your faucets. Running water through the pipe – even at a trickle – helps prevent freezing.
Disconnect Hoses:
Ensure all hoses are disconnected from outside spigots.
Maintain a Safe Thermostat Setting:
If you plan to be out of town, keep your thermostat set to at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent freezing pipes in your home or business.
Seal Air Gaps:
Check for and seal any air gaps on exterior walls where cold air could blow onto your pipes, particularly in the basement.
Know Your Master Water Shutoff:
Locate your master water shutoff valve so you can quickly turn off the water supply in case of a leak or pipe break.
For additional resources on how to winterize your pipes, visit the U.S. Government's Ready.gov page on winter weather preparation.
