Rev. Al Sharpton, the longtime civil rights activist and MSNBC host, has publicly stated that the world owes Black people reparations for the historic injustices of slavery and systemic discrimination.

Sharpton has been one of the most prominent voices in the American reparations debate, a conversation that has grown in visibility since the House Judiciary Committee held its first formal reparations hearing in 2019.

The city of San Francisco's reparations advisory committee previously recommended lump-sum payments of $5 million to eligible Black residents, though the full proposal has not been enacted.

A 2023 Associated Press poll found that about 60 percent of Black Americans support reparations, while about 18 percent of white Americans do. The national debate spans questions of who would qualify, how payments would be funded, and whether reparations should take the form of direct payments or community investment programs.
