Remarks by Champagne Lewis, Pierce County Human Services Department, and co-chair of the African American | Black Employee Resource Group.

On Tuesday, June 16, the Pierce County Council and Executive designated June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth National Independence Day in Pierce County. This Juneteenth marks five years since the United States memorialized June 19, 1865, with a federal holiday, for on that day, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation. He issued General Order No. 3, informing the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people of Texas that they were free. That’s not the end of the story, though.

We encourage all community members to reflect on the true meaning of freedom, engage honestly with our collective history, celebrate the rich heritage and enduring contributions of African Americans and Black Americans in our communities, and participate in efforts that advance understanding, opportunity, equity, and unity for all.

The US National Weather Service Seattle Washington is forecasting moderate HeatRisk for Sunday and Monday with temps reaching the upper 80s in the Puget Sound region. Just in time to kick off the first FIFA World Cup 2026 match in Seattle!

Remember to drink plenty of water, wear light clothes and slather on the sunscreen.

Summer Late Nights is coming soon! The program is a FREE opportunity for middle and high schoolers to spend summer evenings in a safe and engaging place with access to dinner, fun activities and supportive adults.

Summer Late Nights starts June 22 and runs Monday-Friday from 5 to 10 pm all summer long. With 10 sites across the city, Tacoma Public School students can register and drop in at the site most convenient to them.
