As a 19-year consecutive barbershop owner, I have seen firsthand how my customers often view my barbershop as more than just a place to get a haircut. There is a growing coalition that has provided training to over 2,000 Barber to build a culture of positive mental health for Black boys, men, and their families.

The Black Home Initiative (BHI) is to increase the number of BIPOC households who successfully secure homeownership. With home prices reaching record highs and buyers paying cash and offering thousands of dollars over asking prices, homeownership has shifted out of reach for far too many households, particularly BIPOC households. The Black-white homeownership gap is worse today than it was in the 1960s when racial discrimination in housing was legal.

The Department of Commerce, in partnership with the state Office of Equity and community partners, is responsible for building a Community Reinvestment Plan to describe how funds will be invested to address racial, economic, and social disparities created by the historical design and enforcement of state and federal criminal laws and penalties for drug possession. These dollars will be distributed by the Department of Commerce as $100 million in fiscal year 2024 and $100 million in fiscal year 2025. The final plan, due by July 2023, will guide the investment of the funds in communities across the state.
