PORTHOLES PRIZE BASKET BRAINSTORMING

That was the focus of our Club’s morning meeting on March 18.

The baskets will be one of the many popular parts of our Portholes to the Future FUNraiser on May 30.

This year, our goal is to have a total of 20 Prize Baskets that bring in $5,000 to help fund the many programs and partnerships our Tacoma Sunrise Rotary supports.

Here are some of the raffle baskets you might be seeing this year:

PLAY BALL: Tacoma Rainiers Summit Club tickets

DINE AND FLY: Dinner at Woven and an airplane ride from Kenmore Air

CLASSIC VINYL: A Bluetooth record player (and some classic vinyl)

ROCK ON: A great Fender electric guitar package

GREEN THUMB: A great package for people who love gardening

MUCH, MUCH MORE!

Attendees can use their bid numbers to buy five tickets for $25 and put their tickets in a container near the item(s) they want to win. Winners will be announced at the event.

So, buy your ticket to Portholes for a night of fun and a chance to win one of our great Prize Baskets!

This morning a group of our Club members worked at the Emergency Food Network (EFN) in Lakewood repacking 2,350 pounds of Canadian oats to help fight hunger in our community.

We all got to work hard, have some fun, and feel good about helping make a small difference in our community.

Our Club has a longstanding partnership with EFN, and we will be doing five more repacks there later this year.

You don't have to be a Club member to join us. If you would like more info, just let us know.

Now, where's the ADVIL?

To celebrate the City of Tacoma’s 150th anniversary, Tacoma Historical Society (THS) held a dinner celebration at the Asia Pacific Cultural Center on November 12.

The festive dinner event included an historic video, a great dinner, and a silent and live auction.

And of course, there was a special birthday cake, which was made by Celebrity Cake Studio.

Tacoma Historical Society honored these four people with a Star of Destiny Award: Senator Rosa Franklin, Senator Steve Conway, Judge Art Wang, and Patsy Surh-O’Connell.

The Society’s top award is called the Murray Morgan Award, which recognizes individuals and organizations who have significantly contributed to efforts to preserve and communicate local history.

The award was presented to Rick Carr by Jim Catalinich, the interim president of Tacoma Historical Society's board of directors (pictured below).

Rick Carr is a descendant of Tacoma pioneer Job Carr. He is also a charter member our Tacoma Sunrise Club, which started back in 1983.

On November 19, our Club honored four of the six Students of the Quarter from Hunt Middle School in Tacoma at our breakfast meeting. The students were: Mia Firman, Brenden Pico, Hendrix Saulter, and Whitney Ware.

Each of the students made brief remarks at our meeting, which had a big crowd consisting not only of Tacoma Sunrise Rotary Club members and Hunt staff members, but also the parents and family members of the four honored students.

Prior to the student presentations, Club members received an update on the school and how they work with students to encourage academic excellence as well as the importance of community service.

Each student also received a certificate from our Club recognizing their achievement.

Our Club supports Salvation Army in a variety of ways.

One day it might be painting (see below). And around Christmas time it might be bell ringing, to support Salvation Army's Red Kettle Drive.

Our next Salvation Army "paint party" is set for Saturday, November 15 at the Jarvie Memorial Family Lodge in Tacoma.

Our Club members will also be ringing the Red Kettle bell at the Fred Meyer store in University Place on December 13 and December 20 (both are Saturdays).

Fighting Hunger…One Scoop at a Time

On Saturday morning, October 25, a group of 17 Tacoma Sunrise Rotarians, family members and friends did a food repack at the Emergency Food Network (EFN) in Lakewood.

The group’s challenge was to work with 50-pound bags of rolled oats and—scoop by scoop—repackage the oats into smaller plastic bags that will be distributed to help fight hunger in our community.

In just two hours, the group repacked a total of 3,250 pounds of oats. EFN will distribute that food to more than 75 food pantries, meal sites, and shelters across Pierce County.

Fighting hunger is one of the many causes our Club works on both locally and globally. Our sixth and final EFN repack for the year is set for Saturday, December 6.

Tony Comoroda, Rotary District 5020 Governor, gave an energetic presentation to our Club this morning.

He shared many inspiring stories of "the power of everyday people doing extraordinary things" and complimented our Club for the many positive ways we are partnering and supporting our Pierce County community.

He said, "Even the smallest of actions can spark a sea of change."

Rotary International District 5020 represents Rotarians on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and Western Washington, including Pierce County south to Woodland and North to the Olympic Peninsula.

He also encouraged members to attend the District 5020 Conference which will be held May 8-9 in Victoria, B. C. The conference will have a beach party theme.

PHOTO: Our Club President Lisa Johnson presented Tony with a certificate thanking him for his presentation and mentioned that a $25 donation is being made in his name to the Emergency Food Network

One of the top priorities for our Tacoma Sunrise Rotary Club is to continue to expand our partnership with the Bryant Neighborhood Center (BNC), located in Tacoma’s Hilltop area.

That’s why we are proud to be sponsoring BNC’s Back to School Night on September 2. Lots of our Club members will be on hand to help make this event a great success.

Families attending the event will come together for an evening of connection, resources, and celebration. Students will receive free school supplies to help them start the year strong, and parents can learn about upcoming programs and opportunities at the BNC and within Hilltop. This night will feature: Free backpack and supplies, free sports physicals, free BBQ dinner, free clothing swap, resource fair and more!

You can find out more about the important work BNC does here: www.bryantneighborhoodcenter.org
