Save The Ruston Tunnel 2011

Save The Ruston Tunnel 2011 The tunnel was built in 1912, a local Ruston adjunct to the railroad route carved under Point Defiance to give trains a level route along the Tacoma Narrows.

It was constructed with the engineering assistance of Lawson Ambrose Nicholson.. We might be too late but I wanted to try and gather as many people who love the Ruston Way Tunnel & Try to Make It A Landmark, There has to be options of making it a single lane or just a walk through/bike tunnel. Let's try to save it! It was constructed with the engineering assistance of Lawson Ambrose Nicholson – al

so credited with designing the stadium at Tacoma’s Stadium High School – and the political persuasion of William Rust, founder Ruston and owner of the Tacoma Smelting & Refining Co., later purchased by Asarco. i'm in contact currently with the City of Tacoma / historic preservation etc seeing what can be done!

UPDATE: The tunnel is still not been demolished it's now 2018. Idea for Marilyn Strickland & the City of Tacoma Government is to make it a museum!

Dear Mr. McKellips:

Thank you for your email regarding the Ruston Way
Tunnel. The area of the former smelter and the associated infrastructure
has certainly played a role in the history of Tacoma and Ruston.

The decision about what will become of the Ruston Tunnel is a local one.
I encourage you to remain engaged in the process by interacting with
your local leaders regarding it's future.

Sincerely,

Peter Goldmark
Commissioner of Public Lands
Washington State Department of Natural Resources

Anyone know of any Attorneys in the Tacoma area who would be interesting in pro-bono-ly working to save the Ruston Tunnel?

Personally I see this as BIG business paying off the city to dispose of a historic landmark for the sake of building structures etc on top of it. City won't let them build anything on top obviously. I'm pro business all the way but I see this as very wrong! Todd K M - save the ruston tunnel 2011
