🚨 Joint Safety Notice: Electric Dirt Bikes in Our Communities 🚨

The Town of Wilkeson and the City of Buckley are working together to address the increase in electric dirt bike use and to ensure everyone understands the law.

Our goal is simple: keep our communities safe while making sure riders know the rules.

👉 Important: Electric dirt bikes are NOT the same as e-bikes under Washington State law.

✔️ Legal e-bikes must:
• Have fully operable pedals
• Be under 750 watts
• Meet Class 1, 2, or 3 definitions

❌ Most electric dirt bikes DO NOT qualify and are treated as motor vehicles.

🚫 Where they are NOT allowed:
• Sidewalks
• Bike paths and trails
• Public roads (including SR 165) unless registered and street legal
• Highways or restricted areas

👤 Age and licensing requirements apply:
• Class 3 e-bikes require riders to be 16+
• Electric dirt bikes require proper licensing if operated on roads
• Juveniles cannot legally operate them on public roads without meeting requirements

⚠️ Enforcement may include:
• Warnings
• Citations
• Vehicle impound
• Parent/guardian responsibility for minors

We are starting with education and awareness, but enforcement will follow if violations continue.

We appreciate everyone doing their part to keep Wilkeson safe!

The Charter Review Commission is Headed to District 1

Pierce County operates under a Home Rule Charter, which serves as the county’s foundational governing document—similar to a constitution at the local level. It establishes the structure of government, defines powers and responsibilities, and outlines how laws are adopted and amended.

During December’s severe weather, employees from across Planning and Public Works played crucial roles in Pierce County’s response.

👷 Our response
Our teams monitored conditions to provide situational awareness, conducted infrastructure inspections and repairs, and responded to issues related to rivers, roads, solid waste, and sewer.

They also supported homeowners and businesses with property debris inspections, clean-up assistance, damage assessments, and expedited permitting.

Check out our graphic with several key statistics from the event.

❤️ Thank you
Thank you to our employees for their tireless efforts during the event.

We also thank our fellow Pierce County departments, state and local government agencies, first responders, utility companies, and community partners for their exceptional response.
