Every kind of living creature that swarms will live wherever the river flows, and there will be a huge number of fish because this water goes there. Since the water will become fresh, there will be life everywhere the river goes. Ezekiel 47:9b CSB

Today’s verse is an image captured in Ezekiel’s vision of a river coming out of the temple and bringing life and healing to everything it touches. This river symbolizes the life-giving presence of God. God moved out of the temple and into your life through the life of His Son, Jesus, and the gift of His Holy Spirit. The lyrics of a simple children’s song from years back simply say: “I’ve got a river of life flowing out of me.” Where is God inviting you to be the river of life today? You are going to flow into places where hope, kindness, and encouragement are needed. Allow God’s life and love to flow through you so that your life is marked by His presence. Remember, there is life everywhere the river goes.

The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and deliver Israel from the grasp of Midian. I am sending you!” Judges 6:14 CSB

If God was going to say to you, “go in the strength you have,” how would you respond? “I’m ready to go.” “I’m not feeling it today.” “Can you check back with me tomorrow?” Going in the strength you have is the first part of the journey. The second part is the assurance at the end of the verse that you aren’t going alone. Where is God leading you today? It’s often taking the first step that demonstrates your willingness to obey and follow where God is leading. It’s after that first step that you see God step in to provide what you need to complete what He’s asking you to do. Thank God for the strength you have and use what you have to show Him that you are ready to follow and obey where He is leading.

This was to teach the future generations of the Israelites how to fight in battle, especially those who had not fought before. Judges 3:2 CSB

In today’s verse, God wanted to teach the Israelites something they hadn’t learned before. As they were following God in obedience, God was going to teach them how to possess the land that He was giving them. It wasn’t going to just be handed to them, but it was going to take work to finally take up residence. Often in life you don’t know what you don’t know until you’re taught. Take a minute and ask God to show you the things that He would like you to know. God wants to take you to some new places, and to get there you’re going to have to learn some new things. Be open and ready to learn what God wants to teach you today.

That whole generation was also gathered to their ancestors. After them another generation rose up who did not know the Lord or the works he had done for Israel. Judges 2:10 CSB

There is a principle in today’s verse that is as true today as when it was first written. The principle is based on the truth that if something isn’t passed on it won’t be carried on by the next generation. This verse speaks about passing on a knowledge about God and a remembrance of the things that He has done. The list of things that could be passed on can range from a family recipe, a particular skill, and most importantly values and beliefs. Take a minute and think about what you need to be passing on and to whom you should be passing them. There will come a time when you can’t pass these things on, both in your own abilities and in the receptivity of the receivers. Make sure that the next generation receives what they need from you, so that they have something to pass on after you’re gone.

Only carefully obey the command and instruction that Moses the Lord’s servant gave you: to love the Lord your God, walk in all his ways, keep his commands, be loyal to him, and serve him with all your heart and all your soul. Joshua 22:5 CSB

Today’s verse is filled with some timeless truths that speak to the importance of your relationship with God. Your relationship with God is both internal and external. It starts in the internal as both your heart and soul make a connection to the invitation that God desires a relationship with you. It’s from that internal connection that it moves to the external dimensions that you walk with God and follow His commands. It’s not a selective obedience, but it’s a commitment to follow God’s ways always. Take a moment and think about your relationship with God. Are you cultivating a love for God that goes beyond the internal towards an active obedience? May the work that God is doing in your heart and soul be reflected in everything you do today.

I am still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out. My strength for battle and for daily tasks is now as it was then. Joshua 14:11 CSB

For anyone who is in the second half of life, today’s verse becomes an encouragement. Caleb is eighty years old and speaks as someone who is just getting started. Through captivity in Egypt, forty years of wandering in the wilderness, to being only one of two who are entering the Promised Land, Caleb has held onto God’s promises. Caleb has a God-rooted confidence that comes from a deep trust in God’s faithfulness. Caleb is ready to approach this new chapter of life with purpose and enthusiasm. Take a moment and think back to ways that God’s faithfulness has sustained you. Where is God inviting you to step into the next chapter of life with a God-inspired confidence to face whatever might be next? God is with you. Receive His promised presence as you face your day.

But the message is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may follow it. Deuteronomy 30:14 CSB

There’s a great assurance in today’s verse: God’s message to you is remarkably close. God isn’t trying to hide from you or keep His wisdom for a few select people. God wants to communicate with you and provide the guidance and wisdom that you need. Notice how God’s word is described as being in your mouth and heart. God’s word influences your speech and the core of who you are. What’s the significance of all of this? It’s so that not only do you possess the wisdom of God, but you live it out in your daily life. God’s word becomes a guide for right living and a source of strength as you face the challenges and decisions that you must make each day. The question to ask yourself today is, “Am I utilizing God’s word for what it has been designed to do and allowing it to lead me where God would like me to go?”
