In the rising tide of Seattle's gentrification and displacement, what does it take to hold on to a place—and a history?

The latest video for the Black Washington app from BLK WINS highlights Wa Na Wari, a Black art center and cultural gathering space in Seattle's Central District that has transformed a fifth-generation family home into a powerful force against displacement.

For more than 70 years, the Green family has cared for this house as the neighborhood changed around it. Today, Wa Na Wari uses art, storytelling, and community engagement to preserve Black history, foster Black joy, and create a permanent cultural home in a rapidly changing city.

Featured in the Black Washington app, Wa Na Wari is one of more than 60 stories exploring the people, places, and moments that have shaped Black history across Washington State. Through photographs, maps, oral histories, videos, and educational resources, the award-winning app brings these stories to life and invites communities statewide to contribute their own.

Musician, athlete, labor advocate, civic leader, and activist Powell S. Barnett was a towering and influential figure whose impact stretched from the coal mines of Roslyn to Seattle’s vibrant Black arts and culture community.

Barnett broke barriers as the first Black member of Seattle’s formerly all-White Musicians Union and helped strengthen countless community organizations throughout the Central District.

Today, his legacy lives on at Powell Barnett Park in the Central District. Over the last fifty years the park has hosted music festivals, community celebrations, civil rights demonstrations, public art projects, and neighborhood revitalization efforts.

Explore our newest Black Washington entry on Powell Barnett Park, created in collaboration with his granddaughter!
