For , we show you the less glamorous part of firefighting: picking up hose afterward.

On March 22, 1988, photographer Carrie Robertson captured this image of twelve-year-old Erick Posey, watching one of our firefighters roll up a fire hose at the intersection of South J and South 9th Streets. TFD responded to a fire alarm that turned out to be food burning in a kitchen. Posey and other neighborhood children still came out to watch the excitement.

Can anyone help us identify this firefighter?

It only takes one spark.

As temperatures rise and vegetation dries out, the risk of roadside fires increases. Many of these fires are preventable.

Before you hit the road:
🚬 Don't throw ci******es from vehicle windows
🚭 Fully extinguish smoking materials before disposal
🚗 Keep your vehicle maintained
🔗 Secure trailer chains so they don't drag
🌾 Never drive or park in tall, dry grass

If you live between Fire Stations 1 and 2, you might have heard TFD's Recruit Class 2026-1 running outside this morning with some probationary firefighters from Class 2025-2. The recruits are learning the neighborhoods and fire stations with these weekly runs between different stations.

If you see them running through your neighborhood on Fridays, we hope you'll cheer them on!

For , we're pulling out an archive image from April 19, 1990.

Tacoma Firefighter Larry Anderson, at the scene of a blaze that destroyed two garages on E. Harrison, took a little time out to show 7 year-old Chris Becos, the view from his oxygen mask.

These little moments of kindness and curiosity help children understand that a firefighter is not to be feared in an emergency. While a fully-outfitted firefighter might appear ominous to a scared child, we try to encourage children not to hide from first responders in an emergency.

Please join us in recognizing Lieutenant Casey Rosa for demonstrating exceptional leadership, professionalism, and dedication during an incident at Foss High School on April 30, when 6 injured people were in need of immediate medical care. Lt. Rosa’s actions during this incident earned him the Fire Chief’s Award for Excellence.

Looks like Tacoma might have a warm weekend ahead, and we want you to be prepared! Here are some tips on what to do BEFORE the heat hits.

🥵 Learn to recognize the signs of heat illnesses.

🌬️ Do not rely on a fan as your primary cooling device. Fans create air flow and a false sense of comfort, but they do not reduce body temperature or prevent heat-related illnesses.

🌆 Identify places in your community where you can go to get cool such as libraries and shopping malls.

🪟 Cover windows with drapes or shades.

🚪 Weather-strip doors and windows.

🌞 Use window reflectors specifically designed to reflect heat back outside.

🏡 Add insulation to keep the heat out.

💨 Use a powered attic ventilator or attic fan to regulate the attic temperature by removing hot air.

🪟 Install window air conditioners, and insulate around them.
