NSU Geography

NSU Geography "Everything happens somewhere...for reasons...and with consequences. Geography matters!"

The study of geography focuses on the location of things in both the physical and human environments. The discipline seeks to understand the characteristics of places, the processes that produced those characteristics, and the interactions among places. Geography concentrates on the questions: "Where are things?" and "Why are those things where they are?" Geographers take this spatial perspective

and combine it with knowledge from both the natural and social sciences. Location (spatial) analysis requires map interpretation skills, the ability to collect, evaluate, synthesize, and communicate information from a variety of sources and disciplines, and the capability to detect and explain spatial patterns and processes.

On April 28th, Josh Castleman and Hannelore Stapleton were inducted into the Gamma Theta Upsilon international geographical honor society. This society began in 1928 as a Geography Club at Illinois State Normal University. In 1931 it became a national organization and later it evolved into an international honor society. To be invited into GTU, you must complete the "equivalent of three semesters of college coursework, a minimum of three courses in geography with a 3.3 GPA (on the 4.0 scale) in those courses, and rank in the top 35% of their class (a 3.3 GPA can be used as a substitute for the ranking if the institution does not calculate rankings). Note that regular members do not have to be currently enrolled, nor must they be geography majors."

Josh is from Sapulpa, Oklahoma and completed his BA in Geography from NSU a few years ago. He currently works as a GIS Analyst for Muscogee (Creek) Nation.

Lore is from Nuremberg, Germany and is working on her Geography & Sustainability Studies BA at NSU. She plans on becoming a GIS Analyst.

Congrats to Josh and Lore for their accomplishments!
