Cherokee Nation Community and Cultural Outreach

Cherokee Nation Community and Cultural Outreach Siyo! Welcome to the official page of Cherokee Nation Community and Cultural Outreach!

Cherokee Nation has committed to building one hundred cohesive communities within ten years. Building a strong community requires that it be economically capable of supporting the community members comfortably, ensuring that families are stable and that its population are both mentally and physically healthy as well as revitalizing the spirit of Ga-Du-Gi, neighbors helping neighbors. To achieve th

is vision, Cherokee nation created the Community and Cultural Outreach (CCO) (formerly COTTA) program. It was designed with the primary purpose to help faith based and community based organizations increase their effectiveness, enhance their ability to provide social services to serve those most in need, enhance the organizational capacity of each organization, diversify funding sources, and create collaborations to better serve those in Cherokee communities. CCO, in essence, is the transition from the Compassion Capital Demonstration Fund. Our organization was created and funded in full by the Cherokee Nation because funding by Compassion Capital was unavailable for 2008. Seeing the successes the community organizations have had and the impact the program has seen within the 14 county tribal jurisdictions, the Cherokee Nation provided funding of $1,329,545 to keep this important work moving forward. The CCO program is tasked with building the capacity of our Cherokee communities. Community capacity is the collective ability of community members to respond to social, economic, and environmental stresses, create and take advantage of opportunities, and meets the needs of the community by drawing on as much local capital as possible. To achieve this end, CCO provides the following services and training areas:

• Strengthening the Boards of Directors
• Establishing finance policies
• Establishing new programs and/or services
• Expanding existing services
• Diversify funding sources
• Developing grant writing skills, and
• Increasing their use of technology

Volunteer & Community Outreach
The Volunteer Program is designed to recruit and maintain volunteer personnel who contribute time and talent to the programs of Cherokee Nation, without monetary compensation. Volunteers bring added labor, community resources, community information, potential donors, and are a valuable part of the Cherokee communities to advance the survival and growth of Cherokee Nation. Cultural Outreach
The perpetuation and preservation of our cultural is a crucial part of our mission. The accurate dissemination of our history comes in many forms; presentations, demonstrations, discussions, multimedia, training, and education, are some of the services we use to help and encourage Cherokees to keep our traditions, language; our culture alive. Cherokee Nation leaders recently joined the tribe’s Community and Cultural Outreach department in Salina to sign a lease agreement with representatives of the CCO group the Old Saline Cherokee Association (OSCA) and the city of Salina.

“This lease signing is so much more than just signing a lease. This means organizations like the Old Saline Cherokee Association and the city of Salina will have a place for their efforts and aspirations to grow. This building will truly be a community hub not only for Cherokee citizens, but all citizens in surrounding areas. We are proud of this partnership and thrilled to see the positive outcomes in the future,” said Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr.
