Cherokee Freedmen: We Are Cherokee examines the historical, legal, and cultural foundations of Cherokee Freedmen citizenship within the Cherokee Nation. Drawing on treaty law, federal and tribal court cases, public records, oral history, and lived community experience, author Ty “GWY” Wilson traces Cherokee identity from pre-U.S. kinship systems through slavery in Indian Country, the Treaty of 1866, the Dawes Rolls, Oklahoma statehood, and modern citizenship disputes. The work challenges roll-based and racialized definitions of identity, restores the voices of individuals often reduced to legal shorthand, and situates Black Cherokee and Cherokee Freedmen's history as inseparable from Cherokee history. This book contributes to Indigenous studies, African American history, and discussions of sovereignty, citizenship, and reconciliation. This book is available on Amazon. It will be available in stores in a couple of weeks. For more info & updates, go to www.CBIHPfoundation.org
