What does stewardship look like on the ground in North Tahoe?

During summertime in North Tahoe, Stewardship Ambassadors are out on popular beaches and trailheads having real conversations with visitors about fire safety, wildlife, and Leave No Trace. The BEBOT beach cleaning robot works the sand, bike valet services take pressure off the parking lots, and the Blue Beach program keeps the shoreline in better shape. Park and Ride and TART Connect mean arriving doesn't mean circling for a spot, and trash and human impact mitigation continues at our incredible beaches.

It's a collective effort, with NTCA working alongside community partners like Placer County, US Forest Service, CA State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy, Destination Stewardship Council, North Tahoe Public Utilities District, Tahoe City public Utilities District and others to make a difference where it matters most.

None of it is finished, and next season's work is already underway 🤙

The NTCA is putting North Lake Tahoe’s tourism economy to work for all of us, reinvesting tourism-generated funds right back into our community. Here’s what that looks like right now:

Thriving town centers: More than $250K budgeted to bring ideas to life in Kings Beach and Tahoe City, from murals and pop-ups to beautification and street-level activations.
Bringing North Tahoe to life year-round: $660K awarded to 48 local events in 2026, supporting experiences that celebrate our communities, strengthen local businesses, and create year-round vitality.

Support for local business: The North Tahoe Chamber, Kings Beach District and TCDA support advocacy, business services and downtown vibrancy year-round.

Planning for the future: A new roadmap is in early development in partnership with Placer County to provide greater investment opportunities for workforce housing, transportation and infrastructure initiatives. Community input will help shape it in the year ahead.

In partnership with Placer County, NTCA is developing the Economic Health and Catalyst Initiatives Roadmap — a new framework that will guide future Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) investments and help define the types of projects and programs that create the greatest community impact.

This roadmap will help shape future investments in critical priorities like:
�🏡 Workforce housing�🚌 Transportation and infrastructure�🌿 Community enhancement and environmental stewardship

Community members, committees, implementers, and subject matter experts will all have opportunities to help shape this work over the coming year.
In the meantime, TBID and TOT funds will continue supporting proven programs that benefit North Tahoe — including workforce housing and transportation initiatives.
This is one of the ways the renewed 10-year TBID plan is already working on behalf of our community: refining how tourism-generated funds are reinvested to build a stronger long-term foundation for North Lake Tahoe.

The North Tahoe Chamber drives economic impact through efforts that include economic development, advocacy, business services, community vitality, visitor engagement, and workforce development to benefit local businesses and their employees. In addition, the operational budget for both the TCDA and the Kings Beach District is part of the North Tahoe Chamber budget, which is powered by tourism dollars generated by the TBID. Both organizations help bring the commercial downtown areas of North Lake Tahoe to life with programs, events, district advocacy, beautification projects and vibrancy all year long—everything from Snowfest to flower baskets, Music on the Beach to Merry & Bright. Both organizations also serve as a point of contact with the business community to better understand issues, priorities and potential areas of investment.

This is one of the ways the new 10-year TBID plan is already working on your behalf. As we align to the new TBID terms and strategic plan, we're refining how tourism-generated funds are reinvested — so North Lake Tahoe's tourism economy works even more effectively for all of us, supporting the businesses and downtowns at the heart of our community.

Because of the TBID, this year tourism-generated funds are supporting more local events than ever before — 48 special events, including 12 ongoing events. Through the North Tahoe Chamber, local favorites like the Made in Tahoe Festival, the Alpenglow Sports Winter Speaker Series, the Tahoe City Food & Wine Classic, the Tahoe Film Fest and many more were awarded a total of $660,000, helping support the local business community and offer a diverse mix of cultural and recreational activities throughout the year.
Investment in local events is important because they help contribute to the economic vitality and vibrancy of our community.

The best Fourth of July in North Tahoe isn't the one you rush through — it's the one you settle into. This year, let's celebrate like locals and let the lake set the pace.

Swipe for a few ways to embrace it this weekend:
→ Park once and ride free — free shuttles run to the Tahoe City fireworks (9:30PM on the 4th) from Palisades, the West Shore, and Northstar/Kings Beach. Park free at Palisades or Northstar's Castle Peak lot; full schedules at TahoeTruckeeTransit.com.
→ Skip the traffic and take the bike — the North Shore is beautifully bikeable, and the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition has a free bike valet at the Family Fun Zone on the 3rd.
→ Let someone else drive with the Emerald Bay Shuttle — it runs Fri–Sun, 8AM–5PM all summer to the Eagle Falls trailhead. Roadside parking at Emerald Bay is gone, so reserve a roundtrip ahead ($10, or $5 reduced for kids, 65+, veterans & riders with disabilities) and skip the scramble.
→ Leave no trace — pack out what you pack in and keep this place as pristine as you found it.

Some of the best nights in North Tahoe start before you even get there — by leaving the car behind. This summer, the Tahoe City Events Park & Ride Pilot offers free rides to select Tahoe City events and concerts from Olympic Valley and along the West Shore. Think Commons Beach Concerts, Tahoe City's Fourth of July festivities, and Oktoberfest later this season.

Over in Kings Beach, free event shuttles run from Northstar's Village View Lots to Kings Beach for Music on the Beach and the Labor Day Drone Show. Rolling in on two wheels? Free Bike Valet has you covered, too.

These public-private partnerships are exactly the kind of collaboration that cuts congestion and parking demand across the region — powered by the tourism dollars you help generate.

The TOT-TBID-funded Tahoe Wood Project continues to explore innovative ways to support sustainable housing and forest health in the region. Last month, the project hosted the free public workshop, Building Tahoe Housing from Local Wood: Hands-on Panel Workshop, which provided training on nail-laminated timber and engaged stakeholders in conversations about integrating locally sourced wood into priority housing needs in the Truckee-Tahoe region.

May is Wildfire Preparedness Month, a timely reminder that readiness is a shared responsibility across our region.

At this month’s First Tuesday Breakfast Club, local and regional fire, forestry, emergency management, and infrastructure partners shared updates on wildfire response, forest health, evacuation readiness, and ongoing fire suppression efforts. The discussion underscored the importance of coordination between agencies and communities as we prepare for the season ahead.

As wildfire season approaches, residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed by exploring available resources, including emergency alerts, interactive maps, and educational tools that support preparedness and awareness throughout the region.

Preparedness here isn’t just planning, it’s part of how we care for each other and this place.
