Despite the COVID-19 Pandemic, #wildfire season is upon us and now is the time to prepare your home, family, and community.

As the weather trends warmer and we prepare for wildfire season, fire districts and agency partners are tasked with adding an additional layer of safety preparations. Our preparations for defensible space inspections and emergency responses incorporate federal, state, and local pandemic guidelines.

Guidelines fire districts will follow include daily wellness checks, wearing additional (and providing extra) personal protective equipment, minimizing access to and from our respective locations, exercising social distancing, and staggering our shifts to minimize exposure.

The calendar may say June, but we continue to see typical late spring variability in our weather. After a couple of warm days, we’ll see a big cool down over the weekend along with breezy winds, which will be strongest Saturday. Thunderstorms are possible, mainly in the eastern Sierra south of US-50 today and Thursday, with better chances on Friday. Showers will be possible this weekend with the chance for higher elevation snow Sunday. It will be cold Monday and Tuesday mornings with frost/freezes possible. Be sure to prepare irrigation systems and cover any sensitive vegetation.

Prescribed burning is taking place this week at Sugar Pine Point State Park. #ForestHealth

California State Parks will be conducting an understory prescribed fire operation today at Sugar Pine Point State Park on Tahoe's West Shore.

Smoke may be visible. View map with project details at https://www.tahoelivingwithfire.com/get-informed/.

Prescribed fire managers use different methods to reintroduce fire back into our forests that include pile burning and understory burning.

Pile burning is intended to remove excess fuels (branches, limbs and stumps) that can feed unwanted wildfires and involves burning slash piles that are constructed by hand and mechanical equipment.

Understory burning is low intensity prescribed fire that takes place on the ground (the understory) rather than pile burning. Understory burning uses a controlled application of fire to remove excess vegetation under specific environmental conditions that allow fire to be confined to a predetermined area. Understory burning produces fire behavior and fire characteristics required to attain planned fire and resource management objectives.

Today NTFPD responded to a #StructureFire at 204 Park in Kings Beach. The first arriving unit reported heavy #fire involvement on the first floor, alpha side. Heavy smoke and fire damaged the first and second floors. The family was home at the time of the fire and escaped without injury.
This is a sad reminder to ensure you have working #smokealarms throughout your home, that you have practiced your home escape plan, and that you are maintaining #defensiblespace around your home.

Only 1ft further than your home's 5-ft non-combustible zone!
The first 5 feet around the base of your home should be kept free of all combustible materials, including wood mulches, dead or dry vegetation and other debris.

Thank you to everyone at Grass Valley Interagency ECC, and to dispatchers everywhere! These unsung heroes process the calls of those needing help in an emergency, give first responders vital direction to best prepare them to respond, are the calming voice for our patients until we arrive on scene, and they keep the response system updated until we are available for the next call for assistance. Dispatchers are often unseen and many people are not aware of how absolutely essential their role is in the emergency response system. We are grateful for the service you provide to us, and to our community! #NPSTW2020 #NationalPublicSafetyTelecommunicatorsWeek

Thank you for your efforts to #StayHome and remember- We are #StrongerTogether and we will recover together!

In an effort to evoke community spirit and support business resiliency, the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association (NLTRA) and Placer County have joined together to launch “Stronger Together.” The video series was designed to encourage the North Lake Tahoe community to rally together in support of one another during this time of crisis and uncertainty, with an underlying message that encourages residents to stay home and shelter in place.

“What makes our community special is that it is made up of not only those who live and work here full-time, but those who love this place enough to own second homes here, and those who visit. While efforts to encourage adherence to Governor Newsom’s Executive Order to stay at home continue, this situation presents an opportunity for every one of us to take personal responsibility for our own actions in the fight to reduce the spread of COVID-19,” said Jeffrey Hentz, CEO of the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association. “Now is the time to unite as a community and actively show the world what brings us together -- our positivity. Our integrity. Our strength. Our compassion.”
