It has been a busy week of training at Talkeetna Fire. We have responders working on pump operations and learning to operate the trucks (FADO). Today, they even had an amazing view from the top of the ladder truck in Wasilla.

Back in Talkeetna, we spent a lovely afternoon out on the ice with the Mat-Su Water Rescue Team, refreshing our ice rescue skills. We also attended a confined space rescue class this week with other borough departments.

If you’re interested in joining the team, we are looking for people who have the time and willingness to help their community.

Your Community Needs You
When the pager tones go off, it’s your neighbors who respond.

Talkeetna Fire Department is looking for people willing to step up when it matters most.

You don’t need experience — just commitment, reliability, and the willingness to help others.

We’re looking for individuals who can commit to approximately 10–25 hours per week between training and call response.

Pay starts at $18.23/hour.

From house fires and wildland fires to vehicle accidents and off-road rescues — and assisting the ambulance as Emergency Trauma Technicians (ETTs) — this is real work that makes a real impact.

Train with us. Serve with us. Be part of something bigger.

For more information, call Chief Eric Chappel at 907-795-2389.

Talkeetna Fire Department was notified Monday that the United States Postal Service distributed a letter to residents whose addresses include HC 89 with the 99676 ZIP code. The letter stated that “in order to improve emergency services, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough found it necessary to change some addresses.”
Since that letter was distributed, several community members have contacted the Talkeetna Fire Department with concerns regarding the change. Talkeetna Fire Department has not requested any address changes through the Postal Service.
Over the past day we have researched the issue and have not found any indication that the Matanuska-Susitna Borough or any Borough agency requested this change.
Today I spoke with the Talkeetna Postmaster and the United States Postal Service address verification representative for Alaska. They informed us that the statement in the letter indicating the Borough or emergency services requested the change was sent in error.
The Postal Service is preparing a correction and expects to send out a revised letter within the next 48–72 hours with more accurate information.
Anyone with questions or concerns regarding this matter can contact Postmaster Ken Bates at the Talkeetna Post Office.

Social Media Release

On February 24, 2026, at approximately 11:24 a.m., emergency services personnel from the Talkeetna Fire Department and the Willow-Caswell Fire Department were dispatched to a reported two-vehicle collision near Mile 94 of the Parks Highway (Goose Creek).
Crews arrived on scene and provided assessment and care to the occupants of both vehicles. The Parks Highway was temporarily shut down to allow responders to safely operate and to establish a landing zone for a medical helicopter. The roadway has since reopened.
Agencies assisting with the response included LifeMed Alaska, Alaska State Troopers, Alaska State Parks, and Matanuska-Susitna Borough Animal Control.
Talkeetna Fire extends its appreciation to those who stopped to provide assistance prior to the arrival of emergency personnel and to the traveling public for their patience and for driving cautiously during the incident and cleanup operations.

Please remember to slow down, move over, and remain alert when approaching an emergency scene.

This video is from Anchorage, but the message applies right here in downtown Talkeetna as well.

Do you know where the closest fire hydrant to your home or business is? If that hydrant isn’t shoveled out, now—while the weather is warmer—is a great time to clear snow from around it.

Quick access to hydrants is critical for fast fire response. Taking a few minutes to shovel around a hydrant can make a real difference if there’s an emergency in your neighborhood.
