We are incredibly proud of our Transition to Adult Living Coordinator, Elivia Santana, for officially becoming a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in Alabama after successfully passing the national Association of Social Work Boards exam!

This achievement represents years of dedication, education, and commitment to serving vulnerable children, young adult women, and families with excellence and compassion. Elivia also earned her Master’s in Social Work from Jacksonville State University in 2025 and has faithfully served the Presbyterian Home for Children for nine years.

An LMSW is a vital professional credential that reflects advanced training, clinical knowledge, ethical standards, and the ability to provide high-quality social work services under supervision. Having licensed social workers on our campus ensures that the moms, children, and young women we serve through our Transition to Adult Living (TAL) program receive care and support from highly educated, qualified professionals.

We are honored to have another licensed social worker on our team and grateful for Elivia’s heart for helping others build safe, stable, and hopeful futures. Please join us in congratulating her on this major accomplishment!

Students at Ascension Leadership Academy got to meet a real book author when Gwen Renée visited campus to share her children’s book Fuzzy Dragon on April 14. The Birmingham native captivated students as she read her story aloud, bringing the character of Fuzzy Dragon to life. It was a big surprise for the students when Fuzzy himself made a special appearance to answer students’ questions about superheroes and the story’s message.

We recently dedicated the Felicia Ayers Storey Playground, a space filled with joy, peace, and love, just like Felicia herself. ❤️

Felicia believed in the mission of Presbyterian Home for Children, but even more than that, she believed deeply in people. She baked cookies, celebrated birthdays, visited alumni long after they left the Home, and spent time sitting with mothers in Secure Dwellings over coffee simply to know them better.

One returning alumnus from New York City, Motell Foster shared that on the worst day of his life, when his future felt uncertain and overwhelming, he arrived at the Home with his head down. Life had already forced him to start over more times than anyone should have to.

Then the door opened, and he met Felicia Storey.

“When I looked up to meet Mrs. Storey, I never stopped looking up. She forced me to look above to see what was calling me to reach for more.”

That was Felicia’s gift. She saw possibility in people before they could see it in themselves. Through her encouragement and belief in others, she helped countless children, families, and alumni lift their eyes toward hope, healing, and a brighter future.

Her husband, James, became part of countless celebrations at the Home as well. He was always ready to help, happiest when he saw Felicia happy. Many still remember him faithfully setting up the “needle in a haystack” game she loved.

The dedication included touching words from former coworkers, board members, alumni, and community leaders whose lives were impacted by her kindness and unwavering support.

We are so grateful for some special gifts and grants from the City of Talladega, Newton Family Foundation, Jane Newton, Clark and Kelly Hammond, First Presbyterian Church of Decatur and several anonymous donors, all of whom helped make this day possible with our beautiful and fun playground and pavilion.

As our beloved leader, Felicia once said:

“My spirit will live forever in the Home.”

And it will. 🌿

Ascension Leadership Academy celebrated an exciting Awards Day recognizing the accomplishments and hard work of students throughout the school year. 🌟

The event honored our four graduating seniors along with students across the school who achieved high honors for academic performance and testing success. Families, staff and supporters gathered to celebrate the dedication and growth shown by our students this year.

We also appreciate Leslie Mitchell of Central Alabama Community College Talladega coming to present the Trojan scholarships to our seniors.

Students also showcased their talents by performing piano pieces they have been preparing and practicing throughout the semester, making the day even more special for everyone in attendance. 🎹

At Ascension Leadership Academy, our accredited private school, we are proud to encourage excellence both inside and outside the classroom while helping students build confidence, discipline and creativity. Congratulations to all of our students on a wonderful year of achievement!

Presbyterian Home for Children proudly celebrated the graduation of four remarkable seniors from Ascension Leadership Academy on Wednesday, May 20, at First Presbyterian Church Talladega.

Congratulations to Valedictorian Damian Brown, Salutatorian Maddie Parker, and graduates Akina Curry and Emma Lackey on this incredible accomplishment! Together, the Class of 2026 earned a record-breaking $240,000 in scholarships for their higher education futures.

We were honored to welcome Alabama State Rep. Ben Robbins, District 33, as our keynote speaker as he shared words of encouragement and wisdom with our graduates.

“At Ascension’s graduation, we celebrate growth, perseverance and the bright futures our four seniors have built for themselves through hard work and determination,” PHFC CEO Doug Marshall said. “These graduates represent the very best of our school and our community, and we are confident they will continue making a positive impact wherever life takes them.”

Ascension Leadership Academy is a vital part of Presbyterian Home for Children’s mission, providing a safe and supportive place where students can grow academically, emotionally and spiritually while discovering their potential and a true sense of belonging.

We are so proud of our graduates and excited to see all they accomplish next! đź’™
