UPDATE 9pm: The County Commissioners voted to formally object to the annexation due to legal uncertainties. There are a lot of questions about the impacts of annexation and development in this area. This issue is not resolved and will be back for the City Commission to vote on in September. We will keep you updated!

———-

On Tuesday, July 14, the Leon County Board of County Commissioners is taking a critical vote on whether to formally raise concerns about the City of Tallahassee’s proposed annexation of 1,742 acres of rural designated land on North Meridian Road.

If approved, this annexation will pave the way for major development, forever altering the rural character of this area.

1000 Friends staff are recommending that the County Commission formally raise concerns with the City about providing advance notice under F.S. 171.044 and the creation of “enclaves” – rural areas surrounded by urban development – and “contiguity” issues that are counter to F.S. 171.031.

We are letting the Commissioners know that annexation would be the first step in the process to allow major development, and urging them to support Agenda Item #20 Staff Recommendation #1. We need your support.

CONTACT THE LEON COUNTY COMMISSIONERS! URGE THEM TO SUPPORT STAFF RECOMMENDATION #1 on Agenda Item #20

🌱Land north of Lake Jackson is staring down a possible annexation into the city.

🌱If you recall, the owner wanted this land included in the comprehensive plan update that was proposed last year. The county listened to our neighbors and researched the potential environmental impacts.

🌱A neighbor reached out to our team because here we are again, faced with the same property owner wanting, this time, to annex into the city. This matters because annexation into the city could result in a re-designation of the land from rural to urban— Allowing for development.

🌱This specific area is a fragile waterway with a delicate and necessary ecosystem. Our leaders have been entrusted with not only our government functions but also our environment. Smart development is protecting natural resources and ensuring our future has a future.

🫶We truly are better together and it’s hardworking neighbors coming together that will accomplish the great potential Tallahasse has.

A pair of roseate spoonbills was spotted on the lake this past week! This species isn’t super common on Jackson, but can be frequently spotted when the water level is low and in summer. They feed by sifting their spoonbills through shallow fresh or salt waters, searching for crustaceans and fish.

Have a wonderful holiday and reminder to not leave your leftover foods or firework debris at the public landings, but rather a trash can near you. We love our prehistoric middens, but we don’t need new ones at the Aquatic Preserve!

Currently, most of the landings on Jackson are primitive launch only and best suited for small rigs and paddlecraft.

27 ramp is still closed as the state eradicates “giant salvinia,” a super noxious invasive plant discovered last year. Prescribed fire back in the spring and spot treatment with herbicide have been tremendously effective - but management still continues while the lake is low and the w**d to remains isolated.

Have a great 4th!
