Ability1st Ability1st provides direct human services with an emphasis on empowering independent living

Ability1st is a United Way Agency that provides the following Core Services:

Independent Living Skills Training
Instruction and skill building for living independently with a disability. Topics can include cooking, budgeting, transportation, and social skills training. Information and Referral
Information and Referral services educate consumers, family, and community members about what community

resources are available, as well as coordination of referrals from and to other community agencies or services. Having adequate information and knowing where to go for specific services promotes empowerment. Peer Support
Peer support provides the opportunity for one person with a disability to discuss life experiences with another person with a disability. Ability1st is currently working toward developing a Peer Mentoring Program, which will be made up of volunteers with disabilities. Advocacy
Advocacy is one of Ability1st’s core services and an important part of the Independent Living Philosophy. According to Webster’s definition, being an Advocate means one that pleads the cause of another or one that defends or maintains a cause or proposal. Not only does the agency strive to fulfill this role, but we also educate and train consumers to be their own advocate.

A thoughtful gift can create a lasting impact.

Recently, Virginia Glass, through her donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation of North Florida, made a grant to Grace Mission to help fund a social worker position.

By investing in the people who connect individuals and families with critical resources and support, Virginia’s gift will help strengthen Grace Mission’s ability to serve our community today and for years to come.

Thoughtful philanthropy isn't just about meeting today's needs; it's about building lasting community impact.

On July 10, Ability1st proudly hosted its inaugural Community Health Fair, bringing together community members, service providers, and local organizations for a day focused on health, wellness, accessibility, and preparedness. We were thrilled with the outstanding turnout of more than 100 guests and the tremendous support from our community partners.

As part of the event, Ability1st distributed free disaster preparedness buckets to participants. Each individual had the opportunity to customize their bucket by selecting from a wide variety of emergency preparedness supplies, allowing them to build a kit that best met their household's unique needs. Available items included flashlights, batteries, antiseptic towelettes, adhesive bandages, ponchos, insect repellent, trash bags, flameless candles, and many other essential emergency supplies.

The event not only equipped participants with practical tools to help them prepare for hurricanes and other emergencies, but also increased awareness of the importance of disaster preparedness before a crisis occurs. By giving individuals the opportunity to choose the items most meaningful to them, the program helped ensure each preparedness kit was both personalized and useful.

The Health Fair also connected attendees with valuable information and services offered by numerous community organizations, reinforcing Ability1st's commitment to promoting independence, health, safety, and community inclusion. The enthusiastic participation from attendees, volunteers, and community partners made our inaugural event a tremendous success, and we look forward to making it an annual tradition.

VA and Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) are proud to recognize the 36th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). On July 26, we celebrate this important law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.
