At Florida’s Apalachee-Spanish Living History Museum walk the plaza where the Apalachee played their traditional ball games centuries ago. Visit the most important structure in the Apalachee village, the council house, and also st

op at the home of the Spanish Deputy Governor. Hear the ring of the blacksmith's hammer at the forge and encounter a soldier on guard at the Castillo de San Luis, the Mission's fort. Then explore the gallery where 300-year-old artifacts excavated from on site are on display. Come escape to another time, and share the spirit of Mission San Luis with friends and family!

At Mission San Luis, we make the clothing for our interpreters by hand. This includes leather items like pouches and bags. Today is National Leathercraft Day, so we would like to share some details of the amazing craftsmanship at work!

San Luis was a valued exporter of leather to St Augustine and Havana, Cuba. Indigenous tradesmen were expert tanners and quickly learned to make shoes, saddles, and other items to sell to the Spanish.
