My thoughts and research on this Leon County Jail IT failure.

Leon County upgraded the software that runs the jail and court records system on August 18th. That upgrade corrupted the data feeding into the system the Clerk, the Courts, the State Attorney, the Public Defender, and the Sheriff's Office all use every day.

Here's what that actually meant for people. Closed cases came back as open. Some folks showed charges they weren't facing at all. And people who should have walked out of jail on their release date didn't. State Attorney Jack Campbell has confirmed at least one person sat in custody up to six days past when they should have been let go.

The county rolled back to the old system over the weekend as an emergency fix. The Commission Chairman has said publicly he's lost trust in the vendor and called it a significant operational breakdown.

I went and read the actual contract, all 78 pages of it. Here's the part that matters and that nobody's talking about yet: the contract puts responsibility for routine software upgrades on the county's own IT staff, not the vendor. So whatever happened on August 18th, executing that upgrade was the county's job under the terms they signed. That doesn't clear the vendor of anything, but it means the story being told right now, that this is simply the vendor's failure, may be running ahead of what the paperwork actually says.

The contract also shows the county built this deal off another city's competitive bid rather than running its own, and the technical documents still had leftover language referencing a different state's jurisdiction in them. Small thing, but it tells you something about how carefully this was actually customized before it went live in our jail.

None of this is abstract. When a system like this breaks, people lose actual days of their freedom. Who ran that upgrade, whether it was tested before it went live, and whether there was a real plan to undo it if something went wrong, those are the questions that decide who's actually responsible here. Right now we don't have public answers to any of them.

I am proud to stand with people trying to protect their home. Tonight I spoke along with Trey Blue (Chair of the Democratic Party of Taylor County) and many fellow citizens of all parties to fight against these AI Factories.

We cannot fight this county by county accross the Country. We need real leaders in Congress to do the work, before it is too late.

To everyone who was part of Team-Z, thank you — my volunteers, my donors, my staff, and everyone who cast a ballot for me: I'm disappointed in the result. I am not disappointed in you, and I'm not disappointed I ran. I met incredible people from all walks of life, in places I knew well and places I had never been before, doing the real work with no title and no microphone. I learned and grew more this year than I have in a long time.

Ashley Zateslo — you carried our family and your business while I was gone. Thank you with all my heart and soul. I'm going to be around a lot more.

Yen Cam Bailey and Brice Barnes, thank you both for running. You ran good campaigns on the issues, and this district is better for the debate we had. I'm glad I got to know you both.

I ran because I believe we deserve someone who will fight to protect our home — our people, our land, our economy, our kids' futures, and our country. Amanda is going to carry that fight forward. She and I have been talking about how I can help, and we'll have something to share together soon. What matters now is winning this seat in November.

The work doesn't stop. I'm going to keep pushing on AI and data center policy, here and nationally. We proved this year that we have far more say over what gets built in our own backyard than anyone led us to believe. Governing AI — and protecting the Constitution while we do it — is going to be the fight of our generation. I've spent 25 years working where data, technology, and politics meet. I'm not going anywhere.
