Shelter Care's Six Programs:
Shelter Care's initial program, the Shelter Home Program is a long-term residential program for boys ages 11-17. Typically, youth stay in the residential program for 1-3 years with the goal of family reunification and/or to prepare the youth for independent living. 7. The program provides immediate assistance to both youth and the family in a time of crisis. Services include free residential care, individual and family counseling, case management, aftercare, supplemental education, 24-hour telephone hotline, transportation, and assistance in finding alternative living situations when necessary. Local social service agencies can refer youth and youth/families can self-refer. The Respite Care Program provides planned periods of respite for up to four days to strengthen and keep struggling families together. This short-term residential program offers scheduled respite and crisis stabilization for youth ages 6 to 17 who are living with their parent/guardian. The Highlands Maternity Group Home operates as a residential program for pregnant and parenting teens ages 14 to 17 years and their children ages 0-3. A youth may enter the program at any time during her pregnancy and may remain in residence for up to three years after the child’s birth. Services include individual, group, and family counseling, case management, prenatal care, education services, job readiness skills, parenting skills and child development, aftercare, and independent living skills. The Street Outreach Services Program (SOS) provides street based and drop-in services to runaway, homeless, and at risk youth ages 16-24 to assist them in transitioning to safe and appropriate living arrangements. SOS operates a drop-in center in Akron's North Hill neighborhood that provides services including hot meals, clothing, showers, hygiene, laundry facilities, computer, e-mail, and phone access, case management, psychoeducational groups and emotional support. SOS also houses a Rapid Rehousing Program for young adults ages 18-24 and is a Bridges provider for emancipated young adults ages 18-20. Local social service agencies can refer young adults and young adults can self-refer. Shelter Care's Outpatient Counseling Center offers counseling to all ages and backgrounds, with an emphasis on family counseling.
