We extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Whitfield Jenkins, a distinguished leader whose service to Marion County and the State of Florida will be remembered with profound respect.

Former President Jenkins served honorably and with distinction as Marion County President, Florida State Conference Vice President, and Executive Committee Member. His leadership was marked by courage, conviction, and an unwavering commitment to justice.

Throughout his career, he fought tirelessly for racial equity—advocating for Black employees within the Marion County School District, Marion County Sheriff’s Department, City of Ocala Police Department, Marion County Government, and more. His determination was evident as he pursued a significant discrimination case against the Florida Department of Corrections, standing firm in his belief that fairness must prevail.

As a Commissioner with the Ocala Housing Authority, he championed access to fair housing in communities such as Laurel Parks, Blitchton Station, and Magnolia Walk Apartments. His service continued at the Florida Commission on Human Relations, where his leadership helped accelerate the processing of discrimination complaints—ensuring that individuals seeking justice were heard promptly and with dignity.

His was truly a life well led—defined by service, advocacy, and a steadfast dedication to human dignity.

MOBILIZATION ALERT

SEEKING STUDENTS IMPACTED BY FLORIDA'S NEW VOTING LAWS

Members,

FL NAACP is preparing to participate in a second lawsuit challenging the elimination of university student IDs as a permissible form of identification for the purpose of in-person voting. This provision, like the requirement of proof of citizenship in HB 991 will go into effect in January 2027.

In order for us to participate in the lawsuit, we must be able to show standing. In other words, we need to demonstrate that we have student members with only a university student Identification card, no Florida driver license or state id, to use as identification to vote. We recently located 2 students that may fit this description but I believe we need to identify a few more students.

The legal team plans to complete the draft brief by the end of this month. I am asking everyone to please put forth your best effort to locate additional students that we can demonstrate the need to fight for. Perhaps, there are new out-of-state students enrolling in a Florida college or university, or a new freshman student transitioning from high school with no driver license or state id.

Please reach out if you need additional information.

Best,

Pamela Burch Fort
