Meet Vincia, Lead Case Manager at Positive Spin. She’s worked with us for over 6 years, helping families connect with resources that address their needs—including many they may not have known they were missing! Vincia works side-by-side with the whole family unit to accomplish their goals: success, stability, functionality, and self-sufficiency. She knows that this support makes a huge difference in people's lives and take them farther than they dreamed was possible, and that we all need support from time to time. She also believes that investing in families builds a stronger and healthier community.

Originally from the Caribbean islands of St. Kitts and St. Croix, Vincia holds a master’s degree in General Psychology with a Risk and Resiliency Focus from the University of South Florida and an undergraduate degree in General Psychology from the University of the Virgin Islands. She has an interest in Research Methods and Program Evaluation and hopes to pursue a degree in Community Psychology in the future.

Vincia says, “Throughout my years at Positive Spin, I've seen countless lives change and opportunities open for families. It keeps me motivated to continue to connect those who do not know they have a way, or can't see a way, to paths that see them achieving their goals for a better life.”

Here's a list of kid-friendly events happening across Tampa Bay leading up to Halloween next week. Most of these are free to attend, while others cost less than $10/person.

Kids love to trick-or-treat, so why limit the Halloween fun to one night a year? There are plenty of chances for your little monsters to dress up and

Meet Nyela, Financial Literacy Coach and facilitator for our Healthy Eating on a Budget program. She provides our clients with high-quality financial education classes that equip them with the knowledge and confidence to make informed financial decisions. Healthy eating on a low income can be a major challenge, but the classes she teaches for our clients help them crack the code and improve their health and quality of life.

She has been with us for more than two years. For over 20 years before that, she provided childcare coaching for military families. A Certified Life Coach, Certified Financial Planning Coach, and Certified Diet and Nutrition Coach, she holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Psychology, a Master’s in Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and an ED.S. degree in Leadership. She’s proud to be a mom, grandmother, and veteran.

Nyela says, “I love the work that I do. Through training and education, families are empowered to take charge of their lives and move more confidently in the direction of their dreams. With increased knowledge, clients are better equipped to share financial literacy and healthy eating practices with their families.”

Nyela is making a real difference in the lives of our neighbors every day!

Greetings from New Orleans! A group of our Positive Spin case managers traveled to the Big Easy this week for the National Association of Case Management - NACM's 28th Annual Conference.

Have you noticed the sharp increase in cost of living over the past few years?

Rising costs, especially for housing, contribute greatly to stress levels in working families. Stress affects everything in our life, from our health to our relationships. The best way to manage stress is to have a plan and the right tools to carry it out.

That's what Positive Spin helps our clients achieve. We connect them with resources to help with basic needs while they get back on their feet. 98% of our families reported that their stress levels decreased due to their participation in our program.

Everyone deserves peace of mind. Your support helps us bring relief to the neighbors who need it the most.

09/14/2023

L.R., a single father of three, needed to improve his employment prospects and access resources to sharpen his parenting skills. He also desired to expand both his formal and informal support networks.

During a recent community event, L.R. met Mrs. Tape, a Positive Spin Case Manager. After hearing L.R.'s story, Mrs. Tape saw his potential and gave him information on our EACH One Initiative program (Empowering a Community with Hope). L.R. is reserved, and hesitated to seek help. After a series of home visits by his Case Manager, he gradually opened up, sharing the challenges he faced as a single father responsible for three children.

Through the program, we helped L.R. get bunk beds for his children and connected him with our in-house employability specialist. His Case Manager helped him benefit from School Readiness assistance and connected him with the REACHUP Fatherhood program, which expanded his support networks.

Throughout his involvement with Positive Spin, L.R. has consistently shown ambition, diligence, resourcefulness, and dedication to his children. Today, he is employed full-time and his family’s circumstances have improved significantly. L.R. credits his case manager with propelling him forward towards a more productive life for himself and his children. He expresses profound gratitude for the unwavering support and guidance provided by his Positive Spin Case Manager.

We celebrate the resilience and determination of the families we serve. Their success stories inspire us to continue our mission: building thriving communities.

For many people, Labor Day is about beaches and barbecues: a nice day off to wrap up summer. Historically, though, this holiday is about celebrating the critical contributions American workers make to our society.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.”

No matter what job you have, we appreciate your hard work because it makes our community stronger! Happy Labor Day!

Meet Chrystian, one of our new Positive Spin case workers. As a child, Chrystian experienced life in various cultural contexts: born in New York City, he lived in Texas, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic, gaining exposure to diverse communities and culture. Chrystian is proud to be bilingual, fluent in both English and Spanish, and is a huge fan of reggaeton and salsa music.

Chrystian obtained Bachelor’s degrees in Sociology and Early Childhood Development from Lehman College and mastered the skills he learned through his experiences with different community-focused organizations. Today, he finds himself better able to serve clients that need support. Chrystian believes that families need someone who will not judge them or press too hard about their current situation, so he starts with listening to their stories and understanding their trauma. Promoting optimism gives them a chance to find their second chance. To overcome negative outcomes and obtain positive outcomes for each family’s emotional, social and physical stability, Chrystian connects them with resources and service providers that can help.

One illustrative moment in Chrystian’s career came while working as a Case Planner in New York. He was connected with a 13 year-old who was, regrettably, abusing his single mother daily, leading to repeated police involvement. Chrystian helped the family gain access to therapy and medication for the boy that began to turn things around. The young man gained an understanding of how his behavior was impacting his mother and the consequences of his actions, leading to an apology as the family began to heal. The change was so dramatic that the boy's performance in school improved as well.

“My parents taught me to help people who are in need,” Chrystian says. “That’s why I love helping families. After graduating college and learning about social work, I decided to be a part of success for as many families in my community as possible. It makes me happy to see my clients succeed. By helping children, I’m contributing to our future.”

Welcome to Positive Spin, Chrystian! 👏

Meet Cornelia, one of our Positive Spin Case Workers! Cornelia has been working with children and their families for the past 14 years. She has a background in Juvenile Justice Services and Child Protective Services. She joined our team about a year ago.

Cornelia believes that families need a little help from time to time, whether financially or mentally. As one of our Case Managers, she's been able to connect families with resources that help them maintain stability.

Cornelia says, "Seeing a parent or a caregiver breathe a sigh of relief after receiving assistance—or just getting help with knowing where to start—is an incredible feeling that can't be explained."
