The Tampa Connected Vehicle Program aims to transform the experience of drivers, transit riders, and pedestrians in downtown Tampa by preventing crashes, enhancing traffic flow, improving transit trip times and reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority leads the $21 million project, which is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Connected Vehicle

Pilot Deployment Program. The Tampa Connected Vehicle Program will equip buses, streetcars, and privately owned cars with devices that enable them to communicate vital information with each other and with elements of the transportation infrastructure. Pedestrians may also participate by downloading a smartphone app. Participating drivers, transit riders, and pedestrians are expected to enjoy a range of safety and mobility benefits.
