🌩️HURRICANE: DURING THE STORM 🥘

🔌 Power outages during a hurricane can lead to spoiled food very quickly. You need to have a 3-day supply of food that requires little cooking water or refrigeration.

🧊Keep the refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible during a power outage.
🧊Food in the refrigerator will usually remain safe for about 4 hours.
🧊Food in a half-full freezer will usually remain safe for about 24 hours.
🧊Food in a full freezer will usually remain safe for about 48 hours.

❓When in doubt, throw it out!

📲If you have questions about food storage during a storm, call the Help line, 1-800-222-1222.

NO SUDS: You know eating fruits and veggies is healthy, but are you washing those berries and broccoli spears? Cooking food kills germs, but thoroughly rinsing produce removes pesticides, chemicals, and heavy metals. That step, plus wiping produce down with a clean cloth/paper towel, has been shown to reduce any hidden chemical load by a lot. No need for disinfectants or even soap.

Children’s bodies are rapidly developing so need both the nutrients in fruits and vegetables AND protection from pesticide residues. Buying organic produce is a good (though costly) way to reduce exposure, but we still recommend you wash all produce.

Suspect an acute poisoning? Call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222 right away. Interested in more information about reducing pesticide exposure? Visit the National Pesticide Information Center https://npic.orst.edu/faq/fruitwash.html or call 1-800-858-7378, M-F

🌞HURRICANE: BEFORE THE STORM🔌

💀Carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the leading causes of injury death after the storm.
If you have a generator, make sure to install battery-powered carbon monoxide detectors near every sleeping area of your home.

📏Generators and grills should never be used in a garage or inside the house. Place them at least 20 feet away from any dwelling.

⚠️Symptoms of carbon monoxide of poisoning can mimic the flu (headache, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting). If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, get to fresh air immediately and call Help: 1-800-222-1222.

✅Make your plans now so you aren’t rushing at the last minute.

🚨 FOOD RECALL ALERT 🚨

Champion Foods has recalled select batches of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread due to a potential Salmonella contamination risk. The product was sold nationwide at major retailers like Costco, Walmart, Target, Publix, Kroger, and more.

This recall is linked to the broader California Dairies, Inc. milk powder recall, which was issued over concerns of possible Salmonella contamination in certain milk powder ingredients used by multiple manufacturers — including the cheese bread involved in this notice.

If you have this item in your freezer, don’t eat it. Throw it away or return it to the store for a refund. Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, and stomach cramps — and symptoms can be more severe in kids, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

📞 If you think you may have been exposed, contact Poison Control at 1 800 222 1222 for immediate help.

Stay safe and check your freezers. 🧊✨
